  • Tires and Monsoon stereo

    OK, I have 2 questions..

    1) What's the best tire (275/40-17) for the money?

    2) Has anyone had the drivers front door speaker blow out in their car with the Monsoon system. My Wifes 2002 is in the shop now and this will be the 4th speaker in the drivers door. They are checking for a short or a bad amp as that is the only speaker that you can hear click when you turn on or off the radio?

Thanks and have a great Friday.

my wife mary blew 3 door pilliar speakers in our firehawk in a 6 year period. i never blew one in my comp ta.... but i dont listen to music half as loud as her...or half as much.

a panasonic rep told me the o.e. monsoon's were cr#p.... that he could hook us up with some aftermarkets that will never blow. we never did do it......... the hawk speakers are still working fine now..of course...she never drives the car anymore..only i do.

tires..well..since the sz50 is gone.. folks have and are trying other ones to find out which is the best bang for the buck..right now..you will get a wide range of opinions. ... i can tell you this... goodyear is not one of the better choices.. from a price standpoint and overall "gives you pretty good mix of everything"..the Cooper Cobra is not a bad tire.

I had the monsoon in my 01 SS and it was complete cr@p i thought. I do however listen to loud music, i dont know if you do, but if you do, i would go with a new head unit and new speakers, its what i did, but if you dont want to replace the head unit, just check the channeling. If you like music much, i'd say go with new speakers, its really worth it in my book, youd be happy, i was.

Thanks for the info.. It's my wifes 2002 Firebird, so I really don't want to replace the head unit. I have a friend of mine at a pontiac dealership checking it out. I probably will have to go with aftermarket speakers in the future.

          Thanks again.

Another low dollar choice that seems to work pretty well is the Pep Boys Futura Ultra Z made by Cooper. Reasonable stick and decent treadwear. Relatively inexpensive too. I'm going to nurse this last set of SZ50EPs for as long as possible. It's a sad day when my favorite tire goes gently into that goodnight.
            I've tried Kumhos, hate them.
F1s..... not thrilled in the slightest.
            GSCs...... terrible.
            Falkens...... trash.

Some of the more expensive stuff works great, but for those that can't always buy the top shelf stuff there has to be a compromise somewhere.

I like the Ultra Z 275/40/17's as well, they stick better than F1's (wich i thought were garbage) and they have decent tread wear too.

I have 275/40/17 BFG KDWS tires on a set of AR Torque Thrust II's and I haven't had any problems with them. Compared to the GSC's that came on the car and the BFG Comp TA's that followed, they are stickier tires, they've held up better and they inspire much more confidence when I've been forced to drive the car in the rain. Also, I don't know if this matters, but my KDWS tires don't have much road noise at all. Don't quote me on this, but I think I paid $140 a piece for them in July of '02.

I have the KDW as well... they seem to be holding up well. Although, I am not having much luck getting better 60's than I did with the F1's....
