  • Videos of G. Baxter's 30th SS making 8-sec passes

These are some videos of George Baxter’s 30th SS convertible making 8-second passes. Brief summary – the engine is a Gen 1 SBC, 383 CI, MoTeC injection with a Vortech S/C running ~22# of boost, TH400, 9-inch, stock style suspension by Steve Spohn, Bogart wheels by SJM Manufacturing. Current race weight is a bloated 3,525#..... it's gotta come down, somehow.

First one is the car’s first full-power pass with the new engine at Maple Grove, PA on 4/23 test and tune. 8.76 @ 160mph, 1.361 60-ft, the full time slip is here:

Please don’t criticize my video skills, or lack thereof …. My sole purpose in taking the first video was to capture the reaction of the suspension, hence the view of the rear tire on launch. It is just “incidental” that I happened to follow the car part way down the track and focus on the timing board (at least this one wasn’t shaking too bad ). The sound of the engine is worth time to look at the video (1.2M .mpv).

The second one is the car running in the first round of eliminations at the PRO/Edelbrock Nationals, Xtreme Street class, at Atco NJ on 5/23/2004. The car ran 8.87 @ 156.86, 0.093 RT, 1.3X 60-ft, against the losing 89 Mark VII (!!!!) 400ci Ford of Bill Kieler. Not a good view at the end of the track, but you can see the chute pop if you look carefully. The Mark VII was the slowest of 16 qualifiers at 9.8/138, and ran in the 10’s on this pass. Track conditions were poor, with mid-90’s air temps, and humidity to match.

The third one is the second round of eliminations. 8.887 @ 156.28, 0.079 RT, 1.3X 60-ft., losing to the 72 Nova, 524 CI BBC of Nick Rinehart running a 8.572 @ 163.24.

Special thanks to Scott “385LT1” Abrino of Abrino Performance Engineering, in Hampton, VA for hosting the videos.

Nice runs. Has he managed any 1.2x 60 footers yet? Looks like the Spohn setup is leaving straight as an arrow!

The best 60-ft during qualifications was a 1.31.... and he was doing better on the 60-ft than just about everyone else in the class. The high heat had the track pretty slick, and chunks of rubber were starting to tear loose by mid-day.

The car isn't all that exciting to watch.... no huge wheelstands, no wasted motion, it just hooks and goes like it got shot out of an aircraft carrier catapult.....

There is a little "squiggle" about 100-ft out on the 8.7-sec pass, but that was a problem with the car not being perfectly straight when he lined up... there is a barrier in the center of the track that is a bit misleading because it is angled in such a way that if you line up with it, you are slanted toward the outside of the lane..... and you only make that mistake once before you realize you have to listen to your spotter and put it where he tells you.

I wish I could take credit for anything other than making the videos. I've been lucky enough to be one of the 3 "crew members" on the car for the last 5 years. Along with George's nephew Bryan Loo (10-sec. 99 SS) and Cliff Briggs (10-sec 30th Z28 - soon to be challenging George, with a healthy nitrous setup ). I've pounded fenders, made filler panels for the dash, cleaned it, offered a few suggestions on the suspension, and set up some deals with suppliers for sponsorships. Even got to drive it when it was "only" around 1,000HP. But the real tech brains behind the car belong to George and the guys at Second Street Speed in Perkasie, PA. It is fun to see it go together though.....

About 1,325flywheel, over 1,000rwHP with the 20+% losses of a TH400 and a loose convertor. It was not making those numbers with 95-deg, high humidity weather at Atco.
