  • diff or trans going bad?

    93 A4 Trans Am w/limited slip 3.23
I just fixed the engine, had a little fun racing, burning rubber and making circles and now I got a big klunk- klunk- klunk under the car ( under the console or a little to the right) when I accelerate hard. Its like metal on metal 3 times. The transmission shifts ok. No klunk when I accelerate mildly

What happens when the transmission mount is broken? or when the differential goes bad?

Sounds like the tranny mount. Jack it up and check. It's pretty easy to change.

    Good Luck.

Yeah, if its stills shifting fine, its probably the trans mount. Does it make kind of a THUD and sudden jerk?

He he he. I think my car lifted off the ground when mine broke. It sounds like someone is under the car with a sledge hammer.

Here is some info on tranny mounts. Note the part number for the 1LE mount. http://shbox.com/1/trans_mount.jpg Don't get a regular one from a local parts store. You'll be putting another one in in 6 months. The poly mount is loud. I couldn't stand mine after 2 weeks and replaced it with one out of a Caprice Classic police car. It's a totally different design but about the same height. I should take a picture of it sometime.

Yup.... listen to the guys, it's a broken trans mount. Definately go with the 1LE rubber unit.

            thanks guys,

it definately sounds like someone is under the car with a sledgehammer , and it felt like going over a rock or something it was like the car was jumping ( 3 times ). A big thump and then two little ones.
can I fix it? I cant get parts around here..
can I still drive the car safely if I dont accelerate hard?( thats a real challenge)

I drove mine for a few weeks before changing it. just be real careful! The install is easy... a few bolts, maybe 10 minutes of work.
