how do you tell the difference between a "long water pump" and a "short water pump?" obviously one is long and the other is short, but what is that gauged by? I need to know which one I need to run with all the stock 305 brackets and pullies.

There is a visual difference between the two. Both mount to the same physical location, but the long version's drive snout extends outward approximately another 3 inches. Usually the long version is used to accomodate more accessory belts as the pulleys are wider. All bets are off though if you don't have the original accessories and parts. In reality you can run either version as long as the accessories and crank pulleys line up. you'll have to plan for radiator and fan clearance, but other than that it's up to you.
