  • Kind of a bum day...

Well, I started work earlier this week... it is an odd feeling knowing that I will be reporting to this company every working day of my life for an indeterminate amount of time... I am so used to "summer jobs" and going back to school, it's weird knowing that is not gonna happen this time.

Anyways, I am living at home to save some money. Unfortunately, that isn't happening. You see, I live 25 miles away from my office -- no big deal, except there are no freeways to connect me there. I have to take two-lane backroads. Needless to say, they are logjammed. My commute during rush hour takes 1 hour, 20 mins on average. I have burned through a tank and 3/4 of Sunoco Ultra 94 gasoline in one week. Basically, my average speed is 18 mph, and my fuel economy is around 9 mpg.

I can't afford this I am still making my car payment + insurance, and now a $200 a month gas bill...

I am gonna have to give something up...

No, no... not that. What I think I am going to do is pick up a reliable, fuel efficient, daily driver. A Toyota Corolla -- maybe the single greatest sensible, practical car ever made. I am going to put the WS6 in storage, and forego the rest of my summer with her With simple theft and fire insurance, that payment shrinks dramatically, and driving the Corolla drops my gas payment down to about $60 a month or so. It looks like I might actually be able to save some money doing this, in addition to gettng my daily driver.

Now, my job is heavily commission based and there is some super opportunity for some LARGE commissions... and that means mod money I'll have her back out next year, and with a vengeance... but it looks like I am goiing to have to sacrifice this summer in order to do it

BTW: I am your guy if you want to re-finance your home, or buy a new one

How much are you looking to spend on a Toyota Jay? I have a 1997 Celica GT that has been my beater for a while now and I am now selling it. Four cars is just too many!

You need to give up your drug (Speed) habit.

BTW, the commute is always a major consideration when getting a new job. I always check out the route & figure what it will cost me in time, gas & aggravation ahead of time.

There is no speeding possible on this route...

It is constant bumper-to-bumper... I hardly ever get out of 2nd gear.

I hear ya Jay.... I got a 93 carolla beater as my backup car too. I mainly use it for the winter though, and it still has the studded tires on it. Although it is not fast, it gets incredible gas mileage and also very reliable.

Jay, why dont you get a cheap 1000 dollar beater that you only need to put liability on. Often times, the addition of a beater car actually lowers your insurance rates, while keeping the T/A on the road. I know this is what happened to me when I bought my 87 DOdge Omni (they didnt know it makes 225 HP ) The key is to list you beater as your primary driver and the T/A as recreational.

You could save insurance $, save gas$, AND still have your f-body for weekends and warm summer evenings. The only problem is the intial 1000 dollar (or so) investment beater car. Buy something cheap and reliable like an old Honda accord or civic, or an older corrolla. An old cavalier or sundbird will get good gas mileage and be cheap to buy and easy to fix.

Jay - sounds like you got involved in the mortgage business! Welcome! I have been in this industry for almost 9 years now. Give me a yell if you ever want to vent or need any advice! It will push you to the edge!

Sorry to hear you have to put the T/A away - I know it must be killing you inside. Driving my car is the "reward" I give myself for busting my tail everyday!

Since I am still living at home, the T/A is on my family's insurance policy, so it is already listed as a "recreational" vehicle...

...I am going to call the insurance company tomorrow to see if putting it away and buying a beater actually will be a cheaper way for me to go, we'll have to wait and see...

My insurance dropped like $1,500 initially by adding a secondary vehicle. You might not want to tell your insurance company that it is a 25 mile treck to work, as this can also increase your rates. After hitting the age of 25, I am paying a little more than what I used to pay for a 4cyl bare coverage, at the age of 20.

I work for a mortgage company based in Cols called Mercantile Mortgage Company. We provide loans for purchases and refis. It is a very interesting industry - to say the least. Never a dull moment. However, if you're good the money can be great. Are you a loan officer for them?

Yeah I am a loan officer, I am in web sales.

Quicken is ranked #13 company in the nation to work for by Fortune Magazine, and #1 in the Metro Detroit area... they seem to be very organized and on top of things. The benefits are good, and I keep hearing about all these people who made over 6 figures in their first year... even if I fall $30,000 short of that, I would still have more money than I know what to do with - being single and living at home...

                        ...crazy mod time, I guess

I've got a 91 4 cyl Camry for my beater car. I got it free from my mom when she upgraded. It's now got 223,000 miles, has never had a major repair and still gets 35 mpg if I'm easy on the throttle. It keeps the TA warm and dry until the nice days come around, and it only costs me a few hundred a year to insure (liability only).
