  • heavy duty transmissions

my engine project is so close to being done, now I have to start thinking about a trany that will hold up under high HP and Torque. I wanted to go with a 6-speed, but as long as it is a stick shift.
I expect to push 450HP at the flywheel
and 480 lbs of torque (also at the flywheel)

Anyone know any good links or places to check?
I plan on spending about 2K on the trany alone.
    82 camaro x2:
    82 z28 w/ 305 (for now) 4 speed saginaw
    82 berrlinetta with 350 .060 over...3 speed auto

The Z28 is back under the knife, after the transmission, now its the entire engine....will post pics when all finished.

If you insist on using a manual shift, I would recommend a Muncie M21 or M22. Don't expect good gas mileage from either one though, but then again you are talking about a 450hp motor. The M21 is usually $300-500 and a M22 is usually $400-700. They are both strong and I have used them in high HP motors with success. The Borg Warner T10 is good but not quite as strong stock as the 2 Muncie trans. Also you will want to check driveshaft length, may have to have one cut to size. So this will all be appx. $850-1000. Muncies can be found locally, or www.mortec.com/, or eBay.

You can now get a bolt-up Tremec T56 for the Gen 1 SBC. The T56 is rated at 450 lb-ft from the factory, and has been used successfully by people making up to 750HP and far more than 450 lb-ft torque. If you need more strength, there are upgraded parts and o-treating available. There's a guy running mid 9's with a T56 in his 4th Gen.

If the price of a new T56 is daunting ($2,000) there are adapters available that would allow you to pick up a used LS1 version of the T56, and include an SFI-rated explosion-proof bellhousing from McLeod.
