  • Squeek from rear end, common problem?

    Hi all,

I have a 97 SS which has a high pitch squeek that eminates from the rear of the car when it passes over small bumps.

I think I've read previous discussions over the past few years of this being attributed to the rear spring rubber isolators or lack of. I thought all F-bodies had these isolators, maybe I should crawl under her and check.

It even seems like there was a technical service bulletin about this, but I can't remember.

Has anybody else had this problem and if so, what was the resolution? And if anybody could direct me to a service bulletin number if it exists, I would be most grateful.

    Thank You,

    Jeff Rumsey

it is common. I notice it most in colder weather. Not very common in our hot summers here. Not sure what to do about it but accept it and ignre it.

Very common, but here's a fix I came up with years ago and has worked for many people. You'll need a spray bottle, rubbing alcohol and powdered graphite. Pour the alcohol into the bottle, mix in a small tube of powdered graphite and spray liberally around the spring perches. The alcohol carries the graphite onto the surfaces, it evaporates and leaves behind the graphite to do it's lubrication job. Don't use spray oils if you want a nicely detailed undercarriage, it attracts and holds dirt like a magnet. The graphite works equally well and is less messy.

Thanks for the info guys. The alcohol and graphite is a very good idea Joe, I'll give it a try. Maybe I'll have to make it part of my yearly maintenance.

        Thanks again.

I had a squeek in the rear becasue one of the nuts on the rear shock was loose, unaware of that I ordered new shocks and during the replacement discovered the problem. My rear hatch is notorious for its slack, you can see it literealy move side to side , when over bumps on the road.

yeah i have the same sound. It sucks to go over bumpy roads with the window down because it makes my car sound like a rust bucket. Hopefully that will fix it.

Mine does it too. Exactly the same thing. I'm going to try the graphite / alcohol idea next time I get a chance.

              Good idea. Thanks.

Now if you realy want to fix it put a 1/4 inch or so sheet of rubber under the springs. You'll have to jack up the rear end, not the axle to slide them under the springs good. Thats what I've done and have not had any problem since. Its a little more work but should last quit a while.
