  • Header question

OK guys - need advice. I am getting some headers - not sure what brand yet - probably Jet Hot. Anyways, if I decide to ditch the cats and just go with an ORY what are the consequences? I realize I will need to have it tuned and have the o2 codes removed or get o2 sims. The car will still be a daily driver but now only ~10 miles a day. I have decided to let the company I work for rent me a car when I go on the road.

Jay - I know you said leave the cats on if driving it every day - is it unbearably loud?

Does it make any sense to do the long tube headers but keep the cats?

Long tube headers plus high flow cats? (I have read somewhere you do not need hi-flow cats until you are making stupid power!)

My goal is to hit 400+ streetable RWHP eventually - heads and cam next - it will be a while on those though.

    Dyno'd 4/24: 330.9 RWHP/ 344.8 RWTQ (Before cam, headers, and pulley)

    Dyno'd 5/1: 383.5 RWHP / 380.5 RWTQ (393 actual RWHP)

Unbearably loud? Inside the car? No... muhahahahaha...

Seriously though, it is all about what you want. You WILL be pulled over if you do anyhting at WOT near a cop -- it is so loud that I can guarantee that.

Is it loud at cruise? No, not really. Actually... it is kind of odd. You see, the acceleration -- even moderate acceleration -- is so loud, that when you go back down to cruise, it seems oddly quiet. On the highway, at first, you really notice the extra noise at 70 mph. However, even that begins to disappear as you get used to it. After about 5 mins or so, you no longer hear it. What is nice though, is that the loud exhaust will drown out road anamolies. And the f-body can be VERY loud from road noise. The cracks and different surface noises will be drowned out by your exhuast note. I no longer can tell by sound whether I am on asphalt or concrete. But again, by this point in time, I am used to the louder rumble, and I really no longer hear it.

It absolutely makes sense to put cats on if you want to. I mean, I am no hippy or anything, but clean air isn't a bad thing, right? Besides, I think it was Fred who said that he had a friend who actually saw a gain in horsepower (only 2 HP, but still, it didn't take anything away) when he puts cats back on his car. The high-flow converters rob little int eh way of power. However, I do not know if they will make the car much quieter since I have no experience with them.

It sounds like the car's coming along Casey Since I am living at home still, and I am single... there is gonna be a lot of money going in to mine within the next year. That's the plan at least... as long as I don't bomb in sales, and I can earn some decent commission. Heads/cam are up next for me come spring time too

I have to admit I was out with the local F-body club (almost all 4th Gens except 1 really nice 1st gen) and was suddenly aware that my car is just not loud enough - but I do not want to go over board. None of them had cats, all had headers, and all had cams - I was outclassed! But I will say that mine dyno'd the highest for a starting point. My goals with the car are evolving with time for sure. Again I just don't want to ruin a good thing. I hear you on the road noise thing - I am looking at new tires and am hoping to decrease the tire noise. The tire noise bothers me much worse than any exhaust sounds. The local guys here thought I was crazy for wanting to leave the cats on it. In fact my car is throwing a code right now having to do with the cats - they said leave it since they will be tossed anyway!

Well, if you do the LTs and no cats, say bye-bye to road noise, hehehe....

If you were around a bunch of cars that have that setup and that seems ok for you, then go for it.

With the stock cam though, you won't be as loud as they were -- and that is probably good for you. One thing to be sure of, though... some counties in Ohio have meissions testing, don't they? Make sure yours doesn't.

Oh, and by the way... with the road noise out of the picture, don't buy a tire based on road noise!!! Buy it based on its performance qualities.

Would never buy a tire based on "sound". Looking at the Goodyear GS D3 or the BF Goodrich KDW. I have just heard the stock F1s are louder than others.

You do have a pretty high baseline HP rating... should be fun to see what kind of results you get.

Did you ever look in to PPC headers? Gordon is a mod and site sponsor here, and I can defintiely give a good referral for him...

...the thing I really liked about the PPC headers is that they are customized for the different years of the LS1s. The 98 and 99 LS1s had different EGR and AIR provisions, the 2000 LS1 is unique, and the 01 and 02 LS1s are the same. If you go with the bigger brands, they will have a generic LS1 setup which on your 02 LS1 will cause you to have to use block-off plates on some things... it is no big deal, just an extra step I didn't want to go through. There is probably no difference in the end, but when it comes to modding my car, I want things to be perfect, and if somthing is customized for my specific model year, I am going to go with that. Just my $.02
