  • tranmission swap?

can anyone tell me whats involved in a trans swap for my 93 ta? ive been trying to find information about putting a th-350 or 400 in my car but have had no luck. it should bolt right up to the motor, right? ive also found a conversion crossmember at www.lmperformance.com. will i have to get a new driveshaft... longer, shorter? ive also heard from several people in various places that the 93 camaro and trans am came with a 700r4, is this true or just a rumor.

    crossmember here http://www.lmperformance.com/2815/2.html

May I ask why you want to lose the overdrive? It doesnt appear that you have so many mods or are running too much power that you are risking the demise of your 4L60. (By the way, 700R4 and 4L60 are basicly synonomous; the 4L60 is a later revision of the 700R4). You may regret not having a 4th gear when it comes to highway cruising, especially at 2.35 a gallon

I was wondering the same thing. Typically a 3 speed is only installed into a "dragstrip only" car, not a car for street driving. Your mileage will really be hurt without the overdrive and lock up torque converter. Aditionally, your motor will be taching much higher, causing more heat and wear.

If you are determined to run a 400, you could add a gear vender's overdrive unit that bolts in place of the stock tailshaft and gives you in essence, another gear. It will require a custom driveshaft, but that's a small price to pay for the addition of the extra gear.

The cost of a custom driveshaft will be peanuts compared to that gear vendors unit

i have a 383 build-up in progress that will be either blown or sprayed (undecided). im starting to have some transmission slipage, not to sure how long it will last with my new motor.but you are right, im sure i would miss my overdrive. are the 700r4's stronger or cheaper to build than the 4l60's?
