  • Best Daily Driver

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have ran out of ideas on this subject, and hence I must ask the professionals, everyone else in the same boat I am! I have a '97 Firebird, with the numerous engine mods, new wheels, a 3grand stereo, I just do NOT want to drive this car as a daily driver, for fear its gonna get hurt, wrecked, or stolen. Plus, I need a vehicle that can pull a small utility trailer with my quad on it. I have a '95 F150 4x4 right now, and with gas prices what they are, 8mpg is NOT cutting it. I know pretty much anything with an engine would be able to pull a small trailer not even weighing 600 pounds with the quad on it, but my only requirements are that A, its not gay, and B, its under 3 or 4 grand. I hope you guys have some ideas, because I am all out, besides a cheap 95ish civic... And I really do NOT want a freaking honda... HLEP ME OUT!!!! 'Carl

There are a lot of cars that fit your criteria .......I can tell you what I drive.....

I have always owned SHelby Dodges. They are cheap, get good gas mileage, and are freakin fast. I have owned 2 shelby chargers, an 87 CSX, and now an 87 Omni (glh clone) that ran a 14.3 @103 mph. THeyre a lot of fun playing with the boost!

Why not opt for a mid-90s s-10 pickup or Sonoma? They are sporty looking, can easily pull a small trailer as you mentioned, and with the v-6 will get you anywhere from 18-24 miles a gallon depending. I personally would go for a regular cab 2WD.

I have a '91 Sunbird with a 3.1 L V-6. its showing it age but it still has plenty of power. Look for a Cavialier or sunbird that the body is desent. or Grand am or something failry small with a 2.8 or 3.1 in it. It'll be plenty of power and still get desent milage. I'm sure there are lots of other kinds out there too.

how much you plan to spend?

Ditto the S10/Sonoma....I like that idea. Got a fleet of Chevy Expresses with the 4.3L V6...that engine is a animal, ton's o torque and soild as a rock. Over 100K on 3 vans and still run strong...oh, we carry 2000 pounds daily of paper.

S10's are sweet, they can run 15's easy also...

My daily driver is a white 95 Z28. I bought it to drive.

Once in another life I mod-ed a 70 Dodge so much it became not drivable every day. I had to buy a daily driver too. I'm not doing that again.

Go with a '94 - '96 b-body. A 9C1 Caprice is awesome with an LT1, heavy duty brakes, oil cooler, etc., etc. I have a '94 Roadmaster with the LT1 and the tow package. You can tow about 4,500lbs with these. They get around 16,17mpg in the City and 23,24mpg on the highway. I really really like my Roadmaster. It is the wagon version so I can put the seat down in the back, and I have an 7ft bed to put stuff in. I have a hitch on it. It is a great great car. The 9C1s were the old police cars. There are some really nice ones out there for around $4,000-$6,000. You can get some of the rougher ones for $2,000-$3,000. My Roadmaster is about $6,000ish. Oh, they have a full frame, and they are built extremely well. My car has 152,000 miles and it runs and drives like new...no squeaks...not rattles. The way things look, I will probably replace it with one of the new Dodge or Chrysler RWDs in about 3-5 years.

While probably not your style, 89-92 Cadillac Devilles are a dime a dozen and can be had CHEAP!(under $2,000) Mine has lasted 208,000 miles and still runs and drives fantastic. It gets 26 mpg highway, 20 mpg city.

I picked up an 89 S-10 4.3L 6 months ago for winter driving because around here we get tons of rain and some snow in the winter. It was about $2800($3500can) with about 95k miles(155000 km). Good shape with a tiny rust hole. It also is a 4X4 with a tool box in the back. I think it was a great deal. I have a car and I wanted the functionality and versatility of a truck for my winter car.
If I were you, I look into a truck or maybe an El Camino
