  • Need help with cam selection

While my motor (350) is out of the car and being built up I want to make sure I know what I'm doing.. so I wanted to ask you guys...

I'm looking to get a fairly aggressive cam... this isn't my daily driver, and I want it to be as fast as possible without sinking tons of money into it, obviously. But I really don't know what to get for a cam.. and do I need new lifters with that? Certain ones?

If it matters, I'm planning on running some nitrous, maybe like a 100-125 shot.. and its a street car that will see the drag strip.

Also where do you guys get stuff like this? Summit and Jegs?

I'm looking at the Edelbrock performer intake manifolds right now, a 650cfm carb probably, and a friend of mine recommended some pistons if I decide to do a rebuild, I forgot what he said.. it was like Speed Pro or something.. he said they could hold some juice but still would be a LOT cheaper than a forged bottom end.
Edit: Found the pistons he was talking about, here's a link.. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...44&prmenbr=361

I'm looking for any help, advice, or tips you want to give me. Thanks

If youre gonna be rebuilding the motor, and youre planning on running even a small shot of N20, I would run forged pistons. The last set of forged speed pro pistons I bought werent too expensive. This is not the place to cheap out, especially on a nitrous motor. You dont have to do the whole lower end forged, but the pistons are pretty key. Just a little predetonation will wreak havok on a cast piston. (And you dont have a knock sensor to watch out for you.) THe stock crank and connecting rods will hold up fine until you start to make big power.

As for the cam, I dont know of any awesome cams for a carbed 350, but they list packages in the Summit catalog that are already matched to the intake. This is key, to find a cam that brings the power band in at the same place your intake likes to breath.

      I found these speed-pro forged pistons: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...56&prmenbr=361

The small-block 350 is down towards the bottom a bit.. but seeing so many different compression ratios and measurements I'm not sure what I'd need... I don't think a lower compression would be too good for my motor as I won't be running HUGE amounts of juice, or even juicing that often. No plans for a supercharger either..
