I just wanted to ask everyone if the trip meter on 4th gen f-bods are prone to go out? Mine hasn't worked since I bought the car. The mileage works just fine though. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Thanks

I'm not sure if its the same in earlier 4th gens but my brothers 99 Z28 was having problems with the tripmeter so he looked up a TSB and found out he had to replace the whole instrument cluster. gmparts for less had it for around 180 and another 100 to get it sent away to have the milage set on it.

my gauge lights work, my trip and odometer don't. Its not that important to me, but it would be nice to know how many miles i've gone to judge oil changes and such. If i look really hard at it i can see the numbers.

Mine would roll up to .9 miles and not go any further. Took it apart and found the gear on that digit had a crack in it and when it tried to trip the next digit, it was slipping on the shaft. I carefully took the gear off and mended it. Put it back on and was good to go.

Kewl, thanks for the info Rob. How hard is it to get to the back of the meter? I ask because I'm out of town with limited tools at the moment.

You have to remove the cluster and then take it apart. A little delicate, but not too bad. Of course, I cracked the large dash top panel when removing it. It's getting almost impossible to not crack one with their age.

Pulling the cluster out is a pita. Be very careful, don't bend the plastic too much, as it will crack. Make sure the steering wheel is tilted all the way down. The tilt lever gets in the way. You will probably get very frustrated. Once you get it out, fix the problem it will seem like it's impossible to get it back in. I've taken mine out twice and have not cracked the plastic. It seems like you have to defy the laws of physics to get it out and in, but it can be done. Good luck and take your time. Make sure you take out all the bolts, including the ones in the top of the plastic piece.
