  • SES Code & PLug Wire Question

I got a code 300 from my SES - "random engine misfire". How do I know if I need both the spark plugs and wires? Car only has 60k miles. Those platinum plugs are supposed to last 100k.

The original wires have a metal looking shield around the boot but the replacements only have the rubber boot - do I need to order those too? in the AC-Delco catalog they list both the shields and wire set.

I'd never go more than 30K on a set of plugs...pull the plugs and check em out...I'd replace wires too...

    Also, I'd check the coils...

usually, if i replace the wires, i'm gonna also replace the plugs at the same time....unless of course the plugs are pretty close to new, say around no more than 10K miles on 'em

Random misfires don't necessarily result from only plugs and wires. Could be injector, coil, loose rocker, etc.....

The misfire detection system also allows you to check the misfire count for each cylinder. That might get you pointed in the right direction.
