A buddy of mine has it and he absolutely hates their service. However, you can't beat their prices, so it's kinda a catch 22. I have Alltel, and their service sucks at my house, but they've built a tower less than a mile away and it will be active by September, solving my problem. The general consensus is that the two big dogs in cellular are Cingular and Verizon. With Cingulars recent purchase of AT&T's cellular division, you are talking about a monster company, but they have GOT to do something about their customer service. It's kind of funny that they rank real high in the amount of people that use them, but they also rank real high in the "lack of customer service" department. That ought to be a tell-tale sign of just how powerful they are becoming, people hate them but still use them. Alltel and Verizon are quickly gonna be whooping dem buttocks though cause they both have Touch to Talk whereas Cingular doesn't. Alltel's is the only one that can compete with Nextel though, because Verizon's connect time is S-L-O-W.

I've had Cingular, Alltel, and Nextel, and I've had the least amount of problems out of my Alltel service. Cingular's customer service has made me mad several times, and Nextel's cellular coverage is non-existent. Heck, their radio part doesn't even work unless you have an unobstructed view to the tower. We were doing construction for a fiber company in 2000, and if you were in the middle of a cornfield below the height of the corn, you had "No Service" whereas my Cingular phone had 5 bars. Go figure that one out.

My wife as T-Mobile for her wireless internet on her laptop. Price is great and we've never had a real problem with the service. Customer service was fine the time or two we had to use it. We have ATT wireless for our cell phones. I hear a lot of people bad mouthing them, but I find it tends to be people who've never even used the service! I've never had a problem with them, their Mmode service is cool, reception is the best out of any of them if you ask me. At work, there are lots of places in the plant where my co workers with Cingular or verizon or nextel can't get a signal and I've still got 2-3 bars. My only complaint with them would be the price, but it may have gotten better since I locked in my contract.

while i agree with that for those of us with manual trannies, if i had an auto, it would be no problem at all.....i used to talk on my phone and drive all the time while driving my auto T-Bird, and never had a problem.

that's not to say that everyone is the same as me, but those of you who can't drive & hold a phone at the same time, you KNOW that you can't, so don't.....

for the people with manual trannies or the people noted above, invest in a hands-free device.....much safer, and honestly, much easier to talk with in most cases (especially the little earbud-type headsets that dangle the mic from the cord....just plug into the phone, and put it in your ear, and you're talking)

but yes, i have seen tons of people talking on their phone while driving, and they don't have any business doing so....and i've wanted to kill a few of them also, they almost caused a wreck with me....

In most cases, it's not the physical act of holding the phone that causes problems, it's the conversation itself. The states and localities that ban hand-held cell phone use fail to recognize this. When your in a conversation with someone else, whether they're in your car on over the phone, you're not putting your full attention to the road. You're concentrating on what the person is saying rather than what the cars around you are doing.

As you noted, holding a phone while driving is no problem (most cars are autos). It's not the holding that causes the problem. Hands-free devices will not make much of a difference in the safety department. It might be convenient, but not safe.

of course, all that depends also on the individual person, and in a lot of cases, how long they have been driving.

personally, i am a creature of habit....so once i am accustomed to doing something a certain way, i do it instinctively, without burdening my thought processes on what i'm doing at the time....it just kinda happens, and naturally, it gets better with time and experience. however, i do constantly survey everything that's around me at all times when i'm driving, but since that has also become habit, i don't necessarily have to think about it all too much either.

probably the vast majority of other people usually do need to really focus on what they're doing in order to do it properly, and those are the type of people that will be affected by talking on the phone, listening to music, talking to a passenger, etc.

what really needs to happen is the people that i've described, the ones who really need to concentrate on what they're doing, should recognize this fact and take appropriate actions based on that, such as not talking on the phone while driving, etc., etc. i know that's just a pipe dream, but only when/if that happens will the problem go away.

I have Cingular and it has been great. Samsung S307 also great. I've heard good things about Nokia but never had one. AllTel sucks at least in my area.

Go too T-Mobile, Cingular, Google and do some research about Cell Tower Locations. Cingular has the closest towers where I live and where I work making my reception good almost everywhere I go.

Also howard forums has great comparos on cell phones.

I've been with Sprint for 3+ years and other than a old crappy phone I had, I never really had any problems with signal. Customer service is great too. But, like I've heard many times before, "you get what you pay for".

I've got T-mobile right now and I like them. I had Cingular before and I thought they sucked. I always have a good signal with T-mobile--it rarely goes out, even on long trips... I've had to call a couple times about my plan and the customer service has always been good. I've recommended them to lots of other people. The price is nice, too!
