o2 questions

i got my new exhaust put on today, shortys, 3" in to a 3" y-pipe into a hooker muffler. about 3 miles into the trip home from the muffler shop the "ses" light came on, i knew it would without any o2 sensors in, im looking into getting some soon, but will my car run ok till i get them in? thanks fellas~gunter

Without the O2 sensor, my guess is the computer will run in open loop in a predetermined program like the old PROM systems. I think it will run OK but not at an optimum level. I wonder if the computer will go into a self prtection mode which turns on the fans, retards the timing and other things. Lets see if someone else can give a more expert opinion for this.

Thats how every car I have owned with an oxygen sensor worked. You gas milage takes a dump and it runs rich. Don't go racing anyone while its like that. I dont think it will damage anything but it won't run right and will not be as quick as you expect. On the plus side... now you will know what it feels like when an o2 sensor goes bad and can diagnose it quickly!

yeah ive noticed a the gas milage, and the ses light, i ordered them today, i do plan on taking a trip before they get here, will that be safe?

Only thing I could think of is the extra gas being used...possibly some extra carbon build up....should be okay over all. I wouldn't race anyone though. You might want to get it scanned to check for any other codes before you go. I mean you know about the 02 sensor but it would suck if something else was wrong and you didnt know because you just assumed the o2 sensor was setting off the ses light.
