  • ATTN: Ken - interesting tire failure post

This is a link to a reported tire failure on a Nitto tire:

    http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...5&pagenumber=1

Thought you might want to read it and see if there have been similar problems reported by other Nitto users. Looks like a strange failure:

I'm running nittos 275-40-17 right now...best tire I've owned. No problems, great wear, strong grip...blah blah..

I was reading that theard...why did he send it to Toyo???

    Those rims are bad-a$$...wow.

I think Wolfman can help on this one...

complete belt edge separation. im surprised the bead did'nt hold the sidewall cord body unit on there. that is an unusual failure.

9 times out of 10, its a flat our defect in materials or curing that cause that. underinflation could have been the culprit that led to it if it was marginal to begin with though. thats a very clean "departure".......... im curious to see what Nitto will do about it. let me know. he needs to go to NHTSA's site and fill out the little form they have there for tire defects/failures.

      thanks, fred.

Ken, any are you aware of any other cases like this one???

I've seen Khumo's crack and looks like it's gonna break right at the edge of the tread and sidewall...then again, the tires I saw were old and used up pretty good.

I just hope this is an isolated problem...I'll keep a good eye on my set.

it happens now and then to most every tire manuf. you just dont here about it much on speed rated tires.

The way it looked, I thought he might have had too wide a tire on too narrow a rim, but his numbers for tire and rim width match up OK. The other guess would have been a flat where the edge of the rim chewed up the edge of the tire and weakened the entire circumference. I would assume the manufacturer would be able to detect if that was the case.

oh yes........there are quite a few most excellent tire failure anaylisis folks out there.....ive taken lessons from a couple of them...and man are they good!!!!!!!! they do court cases all the time...and win.

the flat thereory of another thought, and a good one, or running too low a pressure at the drag strip and forgeting to fill it back up for the long high speed drive home............

last weekend i was in exactly the same situation but i had my mother in law in the car... always a good impression... i was in LA for the 4th and i was all the way in the car pool lane LA freeways are sometimes 6 lanes wide so i start on a bend and all of sudden the car is pulling hard the the right. I tried to steer but i was losing pressure so i start changing lanes and after i get to the outside lane the tire came completely off tore up my bumber but the bead stayed intact long enough for me to slow down... saved the rim, i am not calling bridgestone and complaining, but i only had maybe 8,000 miles on these tires.
I was wondering about that NTHSA site to report a claim i already bought a new tire, but if i am like 200th person to have the same tire failure maybe they'll reimburse me?

another thing i drove like 30 miles at 55mph and i was wondering what kind of damage could i have caused my rear end from having different size tires?

Hay I seen tires run off of the rims that are ultra low profile tires on big tail rims... But those where sport compact cars (tuner cars)... So I guess that may be why it happens every now and then on low profile tires...
                        Thanks

"compact cars" is not the definition of "tuner cars"......

it happens when the bead bundle becomes either stretched out of porportion or snaps..mostly due to running too far when the tire is flat or trying to take to sharp of an angle to get off the road.....
