  • optispark.... no it has to be msd box!

ok i posted a thread a few weeks ago about my 94 z28 s/c. well i would be driving an all of a sudden it would die an not start up again. i replaced: coil, module and optispark. now i took it to a garage an they tested my old optispark an told me it was bad at on of the terminals-therefore making the whole unit bad. so i replaced the optispark. i started it up an let it ran for about 1 hour today. it died! again! ok now i have an msd ignitoin/boost retard controller. i bypassed the box an it ran for a half hour b4 i just shut it off. im pretty sure the msd box is gone because when the box is hooked in the ignition circuit the coil doesnt fire a spark when it dies. when i bypass the box it does fire from the coil, however i called msd today an they basically gave me a procedure for testing the box. i tested the box an it still didnt fire any spark from the coil! so im pretty sure now my problem is within my msd box. now this is my biggest problem... msd will fix my box however, the wait time is about a month! i cant afford to have no car for a month... so im trying to find a good deal on another msd box which is: ::msd 6 BTM part # 6462:: if anyone has one that is good they want to sell or if they know anyplace to get one for under 300 plz let me know. also i called summit today an described to them my old msd box which is blue which came in the paxton kit for my z28. they said that particular box is about 5 years old.... but thats imposible since the kit has only been on the car for 9 months! its now week 2 w/o my z28 :/ im bummin dudes

I had the same thing happen to my car a week ago Saturday. It ran fine all of last week, but then it died again on Monday. I had it towed immediately to the shop and they got it to start right up, without any codes. I told my mechanic to drive the you know what out of it until it did it again. On Tuesday it acted up for him and this time it stored an optispark failure code. Here's the kicker. Four years ago I had the opti replaced at a different shop and when it was up on the lift I had a MAC underdrive pulley installed. When they installed the pulley they failed to piggyback it on the stock harmonic balancer and just stuck it on crank hub. The pulley cut into the top of the optispark which ultimately helped cause it's demise. Anyway my car runs great now. I hope everything works out with yours Chris.
