I know a convertible would be heavier but is there any cons in buying a t-top? any hidden weight?

LT1's Have Plenty of Potential
Here on the west coast, the fastest 4th gen is infact an LT1 (9.72@139mph with a 1.34 60' 1/4 mile 688RWHP). They're easier on the wallet too than the newer ones. And I couldnt agree with Ken more with regards to the lumps and bubbles. And as someone here once said, "The advantage of an LS1 is just more stock horsepower."1996 Arctic White Z28, A4, K&N CAI, TByrne MAF ends, BBK Twin-52mm TB, TB Bypass, SLP 1 3/4" Shorties, Richmond 3.42's, Dynomax Bullet Muffler W/Turn Down, BMR Adj. dn't be afraid o an Auto tranny, put a shift kit and stall converter in it no missed shifts. I kill manual cars at the track. And when I am moving around 20 MPH al I have to is floor it an the rear tires spin. I had T/A with a 6 sped, it was fun to drive on the street, but I love my Z with the auto at the track. And 93 f-bodies are a smoking deal, the Opti spark isn't that bad. I have 90K on mine with no probs. I thought it was going awhile back, but a plug wire was burnt from the headers. It sounds like your best bet would be an LT1 car 93-97. Depending on your emissions testing in your area, you might want to stay away from the 96,97 because of OBDII. The vented opti is not a good reason to go with a 95 over a 94, it helps but not really that much. The 93 is Speed Density vs MAF for all the other years so they are different. I had a 93 Z28 Indy 500 Pace Car that I put an SLP chip in, put on a Powerdyne supercharger and some exhaust mods and drove the car for almost 5 years with no problems at all. And that car was probably good for mid to high 12's but I never raced it. But all the performance parts for the 93's are different from 94-97 so they tend to be harder to find and cost a little more. I'd go with the 94-95 if you plan on some serious mods. If not, then go for a 94-97.69 Z28 with JL8 factory 4 wheel disc brakes, crossram, transistor ignition, radio delete, heater delete - being restored

This is funny... everyone who owns the LT1 cars are saying go LT1. All of those who own the LS1 are saying it is worth the higher pricetag, lol... I guess that just shows how dedicated we all are to our own cars, and that's not really a bad thing, is it? I guess we should just agree to disagree on this oneFormer Ride: 2002 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 - 345 rwhp, 360 rwtq... stock internally.

I think it's really a case of what he can afford. At his age with insurance and the current cost of an LS1 car, I don't think he can afford it. If you can pull off an LS1 car, then jump on one. I've seen a few high mileage 98's for under $10K so it might be possible.69 Z28 with JL8 factory 4 wheel disc brakes, crossram, transistor ignition, radio delete, heater delete - being restored

My favorite LT1 would have to be the '97. Maybe not the best for serious modding, but you have increased reliablity (lots of small tweeks in the 96 model year) and a much better interior IMO (new for 97 and carried until 02). Newer and generally less miles than other LT1's.
If you want a lot of go from the start than the 01-02 is awesome. Significantly more power than the other LS1's. You get an LS6 block and intake. My ultimate choice if I was searching would be an 01-02 Formula or TransAm.Joe K.

All the performancw parts are more expensive and arder to find for a 93? I have never heard such a thing. Most parts are interchangeable. The trany alone is 1 reason to by a 93, 700R4 for 93 VS. 4l60E in 94 might as well double the cost of a rebuild by changing the name and making it electronic. My 93 has run a best of 13.2 @ 102 with just bolt on mods: Moroso CAI, JET airfoil, B&M 2400 stall, Flowmaster cat back, Hypertech chip and 160 T-stat, and a March underdrive crank pulley.
All said and done you will be happy wth whatever year 4th gen you buy. RAY1993 Z28 A4 3.73, 2800 B&M Very Clean!!

Look... all of the younger members are telling you that you want to go LS1. All of the old fogeys are telling you the LT1 is the way to go. It's just the old farts refusing to change with the times... LOL... now it is me that is duckin' and runnin'Former Ride: 2002 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 - 345 rwhp, 360 rwtq... stock internally.

No 3.42's from the factory? I guess my car must REALLY be an oddity. The fuel lnes in a different location really must make yo thnk my car is crap. Sure there are things that are different, but is it slower? NO. My car has long tubes and it passes the E check emissions. There are alot of members here that have 93 models and love them. I didn't buy this car because itwas CHEAPER then the other models. I bought it because it was in my mind my choice. I make 65,000 a year and I can afford a newer model. Next spring I plan on buying an LS1 powerred car. But I will always have my 93.
My Dad has a 68 RS conv. Alot of people would prefer the 67 but he likes the 68. He also has a 69 #'s match Z28 he is restoring. Sure that is everyones favorite it just so happens he likes them too.
All I am saying, Get what yu thik you will be happy with. You won't go wrong. Whether it is a 93 or an 02, Camaro Z28 Or Formula OR Trans Am. They are all very nice cars RAY1993 Z28 A4 3.73, 2800 B&M Very Clean!!
