  • The dealership tells me I need a new fuel pump eveap solenoid???

So my SES light comes on the other day, so I took it in to get the code read and it comes up as being the "Fuel pump evap solenoid." Has anyone ever had this go wrong on their car? The part is like $35, but with labor they said it would be like $100. I was just curious if it is a hard part to get to, and if I was in dire need of the thing. I really don't want to have to pay them to put it in. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, guys.

If that's what I'm thinking of, the Canister Purge EVAP Solenoid, then that's a horrid raping on the labor. The solenoid I'm thinking of is the little black box with the two vaccuum lines coming out of it, located on the passenger side of the intake manifold. Not sure if it's the same one as your troubles, but if it is, do it yourself.

If it's the same as the "purge solenoid" I just replaced (code 1441) then you would be wise to do it yourself. I go the part for about $10 from gmpartsdirect.com and replaced it in about 10 minutes. It can be hard to get too, but easy theless. Shoebox even has a diagram on his website.

He has a V6.... Shoebox's stuff is for the LT1 V8. Diagram for the EEC system may be similar, but I suspect the arrangement and even the solenoid location may be differernt on the V6. This is where a less-than-$20 investment in a simple manual like a Chilton's pays off. It will show you info specific to a V6.

From a diagram I looked at, it looks real easy to get to. It's right by the throttle body on a 2000. There are a couple of different ones used and the most expensive was not more than $25 retail (USD).

Unless my vehicle is under warrantee (sometimes not even then ), I would never take it to the dealer. I've heard more horror stories come from the dealer (on any vehicle, not just GM), than any other shops. Am I alone on this?

I took my car into the dealer once to have an intake manifold oil leak fixed (this was on a 2.8 V6 bird) and it came out with scratches all over the front end from them leaning over it when working. They tried buffing them out when I complained but they still didn't get them very good.

I never take my cars to any shop unless it's for work I can't do myself. Usually only for inspections. It seems like they always come out with more problems than they went in with. I have one place in town that I trust for the work I can't do and I take all my cars there for all that type of work. That way they kow me and how I care for my cars, and I can work with them if something does go wrong.
