One thing that immediatly comes to mind is correct valve timing? It's gotta have proper timing, spark and fuel.

Only thing I ever heard about those Mitsus is that if the timing belt goes while driving it, the pistons hit the valves and bend them, requiring expensive head work.

        update...

the starter is spinning but nothing else is...

usually, if the starter is cranking the engine, you'd see a belt turn right??? Not too familar with dohc 4's...

        preciate the help

If the starter is engaged into the teeth on the flywheel and spins the flywheel, then the timing belt should turn with the crank. If the timing belt doesn't move..... then there is a break somewhere between the flywheel and the timing belt and that means the crankshaft is likely broke. It may simply be the bottom pulley on the timing belt, but that would have been obvious whan changing the belt.

Could possibly be the key that goes into the grove on the crankshaft and the grove on the pulley, which if that was broken or missing would let just the crankshaft turn and not the pulley or the belt.

He needs an engine rebuild. That's the 4G63 engine for ya. You break/slip the timing belt, and the pistons and valves have a party together.

              Good ol' interference engine!
