  • NFB: Pontiac power - 2,886HP twin turbo

Oct. issue of Pontiac High Performance features an article on a Pontiac aluminum block, 482ci twin turbo built by Butler Performance Group, to test their new aftermarket aluminum "Pontiac" block.

    2,886HP @ 7,200rpm, 2,105 lb-ft.

It was still making 2,704HP at 7,800rpm. Red-line is 8,200rpm.

Some interesting approaches that challenge conventional thinking.

alittle more info to go along with it.

    Aluminum Block
    Dyno Numbers: torque 2,105.2 ft-lb, and HP was 2,886.0 @ 7200 rpm
    with a 4.250 bore and 4.250 stroke & 40+ lbs of boost (482 c.i.)

After many hours of run time and more than 20 dyno pulls at over 2600 HP, we disassembled the engine to check for fatigue due to stress. After we completely went through the block we found NO signs of fatigue or wear on the bearings, cylinders, etc. Even at 43 lbs of boost through the Turbonetics turbo's the head gasket and ring seal were better than we previously had with the cast iron blocks. These blocks will prove to be one of the most durable on the market regardless of brand, price or material. These blocks can be used in almost any application from street use (fully water jacketed) to all out racing engines. Check back for more updates,

The "Starship Enterprise" was the custom made intake for the prototype block that made over 2880 HP

Some interesting items, if I can remember the article correctly....

-header primaries are only 2". Collector diameter is only 2.5" (they want high velocity into the turbo).

-throttle body is 105mm single round blade.

-NO intercooling on the turbos. Fueled with methanol, so "self" cooling.

-each cylinder has TWO 160#/HR Bosche injectors, and there are 4 more in front of the TB to provide extra fuel for the boost, and to act as an intercooler.

-Fuel pressure is raised with boost.... it can reach 105psi.

-Turbos are making 44-45# boost in this configuration. Calculations show they can be pushed to 55psi. They feel the engine is capable of 3,000+HP.

          -comp ratio is 10:1

          -cam is surprisingly mild.

                    That is insane
Very impressive the durability of the internals of 40+ lbs of boost. Did they happen to mention a price? Do you think the bank would help me finance one of those things???

Really impressive from a Pontiac motor. You never used to see that kind of power coming from a Poncho. They really have just started to make a lot of the high end aftermarket parts for the Pontiac motor.
