  • Help requested: Anyone with a 1998 or 1999 LS1-powered F-body

At your convenience, would you please check the connection where the tube from your EGR valve attaches to the intake manifold (right behind the throttle body) and tell me whether it is held down by one bolt or by two bolts.

    Thanks in advance.

I think I've found the answer.

I checked with the parts departments at both Sports Chevrolet in Silver Spring, Maryland, and with Fitzgerald's Pontiac in Kensington. They assure me (and I've personally seen the screen that says this) that two bolts are specified and no gasket/grommet is required.

      BUT . . .

I checked under the hood of a neighbor's 2000 Camaro SS. It has the same EGR setup as my '98 WS6 . . . and the tube is attached to the intake with just one bolt.

IMHO, that's a goofy arrangement making the system prone to a vacuum leak. I suspect that the V6 motor uses the same EGR tube, but attaches it with two bolts as indicated by Firebird8798.

Until I learn otherwise, that's my story and I'm a-stickin' to it.

Just looked at my son-in laws 2000 Z28 only one bolt and where a second bolt would go the is no bolt hole in the intake kind of a large hollow area with a thin support weird

          Weird? You said it, BadWS6!

Weird . . . and downright stupid. Provision for a second bolt would have eliminated any possibility of a vacuum leak. And it would have been so easy to do.

What could the engineers possibly have been thinking?

GM probably saved a couple million dollars from removing that one bolt
