  • Oil Change Problem

Well, I decided to work on the car today, put the lca relocation brackets in, and put the new lca's on. No biggy, install went quite well actually. better than planned. So I changed my oil, while I had it up on the lift and it needed to be done anyways, but on the tip of the drain plug screw I noticed metal shavings. NOT cool! Would this imply a bearing problem? The motor was just rebuilt about 7,000 miles ago. I plan on going back to the shop this week that rebuilt it, and look over the paper work for warranty info. If it was the bearings, what would be entailed in replacing those, would the whole motor have to come out and apart again?

the real question is.........how many ..or...much...metal shavings? when these motors are built new..and rebuilt..the final fit and finish comes from the first 1000 break in. i assume you changed your oil since it got rebuilt. how many times? and did you notice any shavings at all..even minute ones?

Some metal shavings on the bolt are common. It's magnetized to attract them so they don't float around in there. If this is your first oil change since a rebuild, there'd be quite a few from the break in process. If it's not and you've never noticed them before, then it might be a problem....

Have you thrown away your used oil filter? if not i would open it and look between the paper fillament for metal shavings, few is ok, if you have a large concentraion of them i would investaige further, do a magnetic particle inspection with a simple magnet, what ever doesnt stick then you you know it is aluminum, should help you pinpoint the problem. Also wht kind of oil did you use right after rebuilt, from my experience it is recommended to you use mineral oil for the break in, then AD.

the first few oil changes, i didn't do. My father did them while i was overseas. As far as amount of shavings, i don'treally know what would be a lot or a little. The tip of the drain plug was fairly covered sides of the plug didnt have anything on them. Probably because they came off the threads and on to the tip upon removal. It was maybe enough to cover the whole tip, like i said before.

I would look inside the oil filter.

I would look inside the oil filter just to be sure.

If i hadthe oil filter still, i don't make it a copy keeping the old ones!, i would. So pretty much when i change the oil next time look in the filter and check?

from what you've described, it sounds like the normal buildup to me.
