  • Gearing and E.T.

Im intrested in installing 373 gears in my slightly moded 94 Z28. I was wondering weather to go with richmond gears or strange gears? Also i was wondering how muuch time to expect to be taken off of my 1/4 time which as of now is around 13.65. Finally i was wondering how i would tell if i need gears for a 2 or a 3 series carrier?

Richmonds are very strong, but noisy. I havent ever heard anything bad about strange, but I have always run richmond gears for their strength. I live some whine on the highway. Its another tradeoff.

My vote is GM motive/slp. They seem to be the most popular if you like quiet.

          scotts94_z28,
i installed gm motive 3.73's and ordered a series 3 carrier from slp. i had a series 2 from the factory since my car came with 2.73 originaly..huge difference in performance.they are super quiet and i've had no problems since installing them over 2 years ago....get a good shop that work on rear ends to install them i paid $200 in labor....well worth it!!
          good luck,

What transmission do you have? (a "signature" with info about your car, year, trans, major mods, etc helps people answer your questions accurately)

If you have an M6 (3.42 rear, GU6 rear axle code), or an A4 with the "performance axle" (3.23 rear, GU5 axle code) your car came from the factory with a 3-series carrier. If you have an A4 without the "performance axle", (2.73 gears, GU2 axle code), you have a 2-series carrier.

I use the US Gear (Strange) gears in my Strange 12-bolt, and they are very quiet. Have run both 3.73's and 4.10's.

OK... from this post, I see you have an A4. What gears do you have now? What kind of tires are your running?

You should keep related questions in a single thread.

              Merging with "Gearing" thread.....

                gearing and E.T.

alright i've got all the facts now i have a 1994 camaro with an automatic transmition with the GU5 code which is a 3 series carrier and 3.23 gears so my final question is which is the best gear to go with the motive, richmond, or the strange 3.73's or would a diffrent ratio be better? Also how much time can i expect to be taken off of my E.T. in the 1/4 mile with these gears?

Not sure about the E/T, but I got the motive gears and they are (were) quiet as the stock ones. The reason I say were, is because I was playing around and launched kinda hard, and it sent them out of alignment a little. It's not motive's fault though. It's because I didn't replace the stock crush sleeve with a ratech solid spacer and it gave a little. Now I'm looking at the install price all over again just for a 20 dollar part (around 150 labor). Please learn from my mistake and get the solid spacer no matter what gears you choose.
