  • SS vs. Z28 whats the Dif?

I know I want to find an 02 SS to trade up to from my 91 RS 305 TBI! I am unclear as to how the SS differs from the Z28 though, and I've noticed a pretty big disparity between the two, What the difference?

same difference as the trans am and ws6...different rims and tires, suspension, body kit, optional 6 speed tranny, forced air induction and the difference of the z28 making 305 hp and the ss making 320 ..

ram air, not forced induction. Big difference.

It comes with a nicer sounding better SLP exhaust too doesn't it? Or is that just optional?

The 6 speed was optional on both the Z28 and SS. The main differences were 17" wheel and tires for the SS vs 16" standard for the Z28, ram air hood and intake, and in the earlier years a freer flowing exhaust was optional, but it may have been standard on the later models. The SS also got a stiffer suspension, and the requisite badging. Those are about the only differences that I can remember.

Ram air alone makes a major difference.

I thought the two were very similar! Thanks for the responce, that pretty much confirms what I thought. The ram air on the SS, and the suspension tweaks make it worth the difference in price. I have noticed Z's are alot less $ than an SS. Still a big move to even think about trading out of my 91 RS. It's only a 305 and a TBI vs. TPI. I have tweaked it for cold air induction with K&N, and have done Flowmasters with a Cat back system. I have picked up a few ponies compared to stock, and I love the new sounds when I pounce on her. Plus the pristene clear coat over base teal blue, she looks showroom fresh, but a Black 02 SS would be my next move, still pondering. Thanks for the feed back.

The '93 - '97 years were the only years 'Ram Air' actually worked.

Get a t/a or ws6. I think they look more sexy. O and black or sunset orange is the way to go.

I used to always be a camaro guy...but when I bought I WS6 I realized how many more curves it has...much hotter! and that ram air hood is so mean. My friend always says its really intimidating to see that in his rear view when i sneak up behind him...

SS vs Z28, bigger price tag, Ram Air hood(the 98+ versions in the WS6s work DJ Taso, maybe you can explain that better? i'm kinda confused) anywho, SS spoiler is a higher spoiler with LED lights instead of the stock Z28 spoiler. Rims, badging, suspension. Although advertised numbers are better in the SS for horsepower I really dont think it would take you much at all to get them at the same speed. I think its an advertising ploy. just my conspiracy theory...the SS's are way badder than the Z28's IMO, everyone and their brother has a Z28 and they look too much like the V6s...when ever I see an SS it catches my eye...

Sorry, I meant they're not as functional as the '93 - '97's were.

If you look at a normal '98+ T/A or Formula and compare it to a '98+ T/A or Formula WS6, you can see the airbox is still in the same position. Now, compare a '93 - '97 T/A or Formula to a '93 - '97 T/A or Formula WS6 and you'll notice the difference.

Like Wolfman said, the ram air doesn't kick in until 100 MPh or so.

the 98+ WS6 lower intake box has a larger intake opening than the T/A thus the entire integral rad support/lower air box has a different p/n. This is specific to the WS6 only, not the Firehawk since they are modified T/A's, not WS6's.

                          WS6 heavier than SS???

I agree that the F-Bird WS6 is about as intimidating in a rear view mirrior as it gets, and I too agree the lines have a lot more Sex appeal than the Camaro SS. I was told from a somewhat reliable source that thr WS6 was heavier than the SS. Is there any truth to that?

I've heard the same thing about the birds weighing more. Not too sure on that one. I do agree somewhat with DJ Taso on the functionality, both are functional, one more than the other, not too sure, haven't seen the set-ups. The set up for my ram-air looks like a decent set up. As far as the 100mph+, I don't know, wheni got on it around 50+ I can hear that air getting sucked in.
Another option the SS's and the WS6's came with was steering wheel controls for the radio. My opinion, WS6s do look better, but i'm happy with my z. I could change the spoiler and the badging if I wanted too and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between mine and an SS. But I don't like the people that try to advertise their cars as something they are not. For instance, there's a guy here with z28 tags and its a 6 cylinder.
