  • think msd box died again

i think my msd box died again. all of a sudden the car dies and i cant start it. last time this happened i had no spark like this time. last time i replaced optispark coil and module. im thinkin i have a real mickey moused spade clips hoilding the power from the msd to the coil im thinkin it could just be those but im just gonna swap out the box as well cuz when the car died the box was hot as hell since i was sittin in traffic even with the electric fan on. grrrrrr i hate msd i need mallory!!!!!

In 20 years, I've only had one MSD box go bad. My current one has had easily 30K miles of use with no problems. I can tell you that they don't like being shorted out. All connections should be soldered and shrink wrapped, finally covered in a loom. If any water gets into the connections, you will fry the unit in short order.... no pun intended. Heat soak can be fatal in the long haul as well. Where are you mounting the box?

My buddy blew out a couple MSD boxes. Turns out he was running incorrect plug wires. You might want to check that.

          mounting

the box was mounted under the hood on the drivers side on top of the strut tower. i actually just got another box but it doesnt have the ignition retard for my s/c. its just the regular 6al but i ran wires from the coil through a grommet and im going to mount this one inside on the pass side left kickpanel. that water damage and right/wrong plug wires are both very interesting i think im going to get at least 8 mm wires this time. you guys dont think there should be a huge deal if i dont have any ignition retard on this as long as i run high test do u? bcuz before when i had the 6boost timin master box i never had the timin retarded at all and msd said as long as it ran fin there shouldnt be a problem. i know im running the risk of detonation but high test shoulllld take care of that for the most part since it burns slower in the cylinders.........

It had to do with resistance(ohms) of the wires.
