  • Buying camaro, got questions.

I will probably be purchasing a camaro and I have a few questions.
    1. It is a T-Top but the rubber seemed to be in good condition nor brittle or cracked, anything i should look for?
    2. It has had previous problems with overheeting but it was taken to the dealership and had the radiator flushed and the thermostat replaced (it never actually overheated just got warm) is this something that should scare me?
    3. The AC is broken, I don't know a ton about AC but he said it was somethin about the clutch on the AC, but im going to take it to my mechaninc and have him tell me before I buy it. Anything to worry about here?
    4. The power windows work just fine but the switch on the drivers side to roll down the passenger window doesnt work. Big deal?
    5. It has 85k miles, all of which where put on by an 48 year old man who had no plans of selling the car but recently passed away.
It has all options, cruise control,ac,leather,6 speed tranny, bose system etc, and they are asking 6500 obo but im thinking since it needs tires and ac work ill get it around 5. Is this good?
    It is a 96 Z28 camaro t-top.

I wouldn't worry about that little stuff. If he takes 6K for it, I'd buy it. I don't think it'll go down to 5 grand for that car. Who knows though. Good luck, sounds like a good car.

      $5K is way cheap

That car retails for $9450.00 in the "book" I looked it up in N.A.D.A. the milage is good, and the items you mentioned are no biggey. What color is the car? If it's really clean, and you are capable of keeping it that way, buy it. It is worth twice what they are asking at "retail"

Lets see.. You've pretty much listed common problems, well not necessarily problems, but the quirks that come with owning an f-body.

        1. The t-top rubber, not too much you can really look for besides cracks and what not, if the window alignment is off, it can be adjusted yourself, so no biggy, just keep the rubber treated with an armorall type product so it doesnt crack.
        2. When sitting the f-body's do get warm, it takes a while for the thermostat to open to engage the fan, around 210 or so, so thats no big deal, especially since you said it was just flushed and the thermo was replaced.
        3. A/C, im not an expert on a/c, something you might want to get checked out, me personally never use mine, Ever. Power robbing accessories and more gas used. I drive with the windows down, and if its raining, or too hot not to have a/c, i drive my truck, ice cold!
        4. Power window switch, a few bucks (under 20) and a couple 15 cent clips if you bend the old ones and a few minutes later and it will work.
        5. Sounds like a great deal to me. I'd go for it. If i had my choice between another f-bod like that, or my s-10 extreme, i'd go with that. Good luck on your purchase, i'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Tires.. There are many to chose from, you can search the threads on here, they have been discussed numerous times, and as mentioned by someone else in another thread, tirerack.com has great user feedback from customers and a wide variety of tires for you.
        Again good luck!

I personally found a 95 Z28 with t tops, 43,000 miles on it, adult driven and white for $5,500 so there are always some bargains out there. Make sure that this is 100% definitely the car that you want though. I got a red Trans Am and it infuriates me now because i wish that i had gotten a black one. Don't make the same mistake and settle on something because you don't think you can find something better.
Red 95 Trans Am: M6, Moroso CAI, Magnaflow, Spohn sway bars, back to life as of 2/15/10!!!
          SOLD- Kinda miss it
94 Del Sol VTEC: 27 city/ 33 highway, knee deep in slowness
          SOLD- Good riddance!
2006 Ford Fusion: 2.3, 5 speed, could run 15lbs of boost with a 150 shot and it'd still be slow

That price seems a little high to me. If you live in Snow country then AC is no big deal but count on at least $500 to get it fixed. Also, window problem is probably a motor, not a switch. Never replaced one so I have no idea how much that might cost.

The overheating thing may or may not be a problem. GM set these cars up to run around 225 when idling. Personally I thought that was retarded. You can fix it several different ways but for less about $100 you can change the Thermo to a 165 (?) and get a switch from slp that activates the cooling fans at 190 instead of 225. An essential mod if you live in the south.

Yeh I live in the south. I was going to go buy the car today, call the guy and he told me he sold it last night(which is the time he told me he had work so he could not let me look at it) im rather p!$$ed and it has ruined my day.

I'm sorry man. That happened to me when I wanted to buy a 79 TA. Well as it was said about the motor, they are less than 75 at advance auto, and a d-i-y job, for future reference. Keep searching, I'm sure you'll find one and keep us posted!
