I basically use several items to do aluminum, most of which were already mentioned. I use aluminum cleaner available from a paint shop which can brighten rough castings like new (it needs to be diluted). Castings never look as good as billet, but can be made to look real nice - start with whatever abrasive is needed (240,320,400,600,1000) grit and get all the scratches out from the previous abrasive. Use tripoli for metal removal, red rouge for buffing. Mothers, Wenol, Blue Magic, Simichrome, etc. for final shine.
My car actually looks nicer than this now, but I don't have an up-to-date picture on the net. You can see where I've done some work to the alternator, bracket, ac lines, manifold, TB, and fuel rails. When I'm at a car show, I'll pass the time by polishing this stuff. Each time it gets a little brighter.
