  • Proper pressure of Oil Pump

I was just wondering...what is the normal operating pressure that an Oil Pump should be putting out? Like under regular idle, then acceleration? Thanks!

    10p.s.i. per 1000 RPM

I recentely had a similar question & a number of knowledgable F-body guy's told me 10psi per 1,000 rpm's I had lost oil pressure due to changing the viscosity of my oil when I changed it. Actually I didn't change it, my son in law did when he changed my oil for me. He got a lower viscosity & my oil pressure dropped in half. I got the good feedback I needed right here on this most excellent message forum. I changed back & all is well. I am back to 60 psi when cruising over 60MPH. Hope that gives you some good info.

Thanks, Mine is idling at about 20 psi I was wondering if that is enough

GM says 6psi is enough at idle.... seems a little on the low side to me. But 20psi at idle is fine. When my car was brand new, the idle pressure was 30-35psi, and at 2,000rpm it was over 40psi. Over the course of 65,000 miles, it only dropped a couple psi.

The 10psi/1000rpm is a very general "rule of thumb", and its been discussed on the "Advanced Tech" board at CZ28.com. The opinions from the experienced engine builders was that it was a very conservative rule of thumb, and that engine could survive and remain healthy at lower pressures.

Anybody with an LS1 have any input on oil pressure? I notice my Silverado LR4 (cast iron 4.8L LS1 derivative) runs 60psi on cold start, stays above 40psi at hot idle, and reaches 60psi at anything over about 1,800rpm, approaching 80psi at redline. My 381 LT1 stroker runs similar numbers, but that runs an 80psi relief spring and 20W-50 oil.
