  • Supercharging.. Can it be done?

Hey guys.. new guy here. I have a situation and can't seem to find any answers..

My neighbor has a 1989 Chevy fullsize pickup.. 5.7 Liter w/ a 700R.. He put in a 400 turbo in place of the 700R and now it runs like crap. He says he's done w/ it and is gonna pull the motor and stick in a carb'd 350.. Well, he says he'll sell it to me w/ the chip for 1000 bucks.. it's a Whipple.. I dunno the first thing about superchargers other then the fact I want it! My question is.. Are there any stock Camaros made using the same 5.7 that his truck comes w/? I wanna stick it in a Camaro.. but don't want tons of headaches with it. Should I pass on it or buy it? Also do you think 1000 seems like a good price for it? It's a polished chrome look and he says he'll give me everything it comes with. PLEASE HELP.

Supply the model and brand of supercharger for an accurate answer, as well as the year Camaro you want to put it in. Without that information, all anyone here can do is speculate.

Sorry about that guys.. The only thing I know of the SC is it's a whipple. I wanna put it in any 350 Camaro that it will work with. I know his truck is an 89.. So Im guessing Ill want something late 80s or early 90s to put it in. Where could I find the info for the SC..

Whipple is the name of the guy that invented that type of supercharger. It is not a brand name.

Setting up this type of thing is not as simple as just bolting it on. An angine must be built for a supercharger. You'll need alot more information that what is provided here so far to do it.

It sounds like the charger you are talking about replaces the intake manifold... Impossible to say until more details are available.

Un-true www.whipplesuperchargers.com, it is a company and the charger for a pickup may fit a car but I would guess if He bought the kit for and 89 pickup brackes would be all wrong for a car. You would probably have to order the bracketry and fit kit for your car.

I would check out Whipples site and look at the package for the 89 pickup and then at one for your car see how much can be reused and ask whipple how much whats missing would cost. Im sure the chip wont work because of the different engine managment system. It may not be cost efective to buy it for a $1000 and have to buy all the missing parts for another $1000.

Two of the most important things will be getting the correct brackets and the correct crank pully setup to bolt up to a 2nd-3rd Gen SBC. Does your friend have everything to bolt up the charger?
