Am I missing something? It looks like this just replaces the high voltage section not the low voltage section which is the part that is prone to fail.

I thought the same thing. BUT... it is the ozone created from the high voltage section that causes failure of the low voltage section. If you eliminate the high voltage stuff from the opti, it should last much longer.

It is not a complete opti replacement.

They have been around for some time... Another choice would be the LTCC.

The Delteq setup uses the 4-coil pack and controller from the Northstar engine. And it still requires the cam positon signals from the Opti. Delteq has promised a TOTAL replacement for the Opti, but its been 6 months and no product yet.

Interestingly, Electromotive sold a TOTAL replacement for the Opti back in 1998/99. It was called the Opti-Elimiinator/Super Direct Ignition, and also used a 4-coil, waste spark setup similar to the one used on the Buick GN/GNX turbos. They only sold about 20 units, and pulled them off the market, because the units inability to correctly synch the injectors to the cam position (it used only a crank trigger wheel) cause roughness problems in the 94/95 cars, and wouldn't work at all with the OBD-II cars. I ran an E'motive unit for a couple of years, with NO Opti. You could spray water on the front of th eengine with no concerns .

The even more interesting thing is that the Delteq unit is designed by the same guy that did the E'motive setup, so here it if 5 years later, and he still hasn't figured it out.

The LTCC is an interesting unit very similar to the Delteq, but can drive 8 individual LS1-style coils.

And then there is the DynaSpark.... an Opti using a few upgraded components in a well-sealed/vented billet case.

And finally, if you have an aftermarket ECU, like a Gen 7 or the MoTeC, you can use the Opti signals for cam and crank position, and drive a single coil or 8 coils system. I've been running the MoTec with 8 LS1-style coils for 4 years now. One of the most powerful LT1's ever built used the same system.

So what do you think we should do for those of us who are experiencing bad opti sparks, Fred?
