new car

it is in a some what good shape, but my parents don't think I can handle the responsiblity of fixing up what needs to be done and owning what they call an antique car.. it's a beautiful car but would need alot of $$ to get it in top shape I dunno to much bout fixing cars up but have so many friends who own cars that know alot so some talking and negotiating will occur so... we'll see if not i'm getting the next best thing I can afford that is being given to me... a 98 maxima

What kinda shape is it in?

There are lots of things to consider...
If it is prestine, you need to keep it that way in order to maintain its value. That means not driving it too much, or driving it and spending alot to maintain it as perfect.

If it needs work, the work may be expensive if you are not able to do the labor yourself. Do you have help, or the financial means to keep it nice and roadworthy?

You may ask yourself if you are ready for a classic old car. It is not a new Dodge Neon. It is going to require alot of attention that a more practical new car will not.

You might decide, based on your needs and wants to sell it and get something more practical for your situation.

If you have the ability to work on it, a place to keep it safe and a second car to drive while it is getting worked on or stored, go for it. If it is prestine, I would never drive it to a school. The other jelous kids could destroy it.

It's a hard call for me to make. It all depends on who you are, what your interests are and what you need from a car. It also depends on how capable you are of the new responsibilities of care and maintenance. There is alot of work involved in that car compared to todays newer models.

That pretty much sums it up. Unless your grandfather really took good care of it and stored it, I can almost guarantee that's its going to need a lot of work. With the age of that car there are probably some engine problems (engine smokes, for example) and some body rust.

I'm not saying don't buy it if just looks bad. There is nothing, I mean nothing, like seeing an old car fully restored (or modified) to like new condition. I'm daydreaming right now just thinking about 'em .

It could be a very valuable learning experience, too. This may be a way for you to learn some basics of auto repair (everybody should learn how to do something on their own cars, in my opinion).

But, just like TraceZ said, it all depends on what you want to do and/or how far you want to go with it. Good luck either way!

2 things to look for. Mud (bondo etc.) and body panel rot in the rear quarters. Those cars had a habit of rotting out in the rear. In those years, the car makers still had not understood that every time you open the trunk in the rain, 2 gallons of water got in there, and there usually wasn't a drain.

Some people say that if the frame is good, every thing else is fixable. I hate body work, so i tend to avoid it if possible when I buy a car. It's all up to you. If this is your first classic car, be very honest with yourself about what you want from it. I know a lot of folks who spend 10 years getting it right, because that's what they want. It's a passion to get every detail perfect. Others just buy them and drive them.

Know your goals before hand. It will help keep it in perspective. Good luck.

If it is a fastback, you could get it and sell it to these people and make some money.

Where you located? I have many friends in the car business here in South TX. The Maximas are nice rides........I guess it just depends on much work it needs.

Sorry hydrasgrl17, didn't mean to hijack your thread, but Ken (wolfman) is one those "special people" , so we have to keep him in line every now and then. More NOW than THEN most of the time.

He ate paint chips as a child and his condition has progressively gotten worse. It is so sad to see such a waste of a great mind.
