You know what really got my attention the other day. I was watching a special on "Dateline" the other day about the dramatic rise lately in police chase fatalities.

I'll have to find the story.....but these two young girls (i think they were like 20, and 21) were speeding and then pursued by an officer. Well the girl driving for some reason freaked out and decided to run from the police on a major highway. Well to make a long story short, the pursuing officer used the "PIT" manuever and spun her SUV off the highway into a bunch of trees in a ditch. Both girls were killed on impact.

The driver WAS endangering people on the highway by her driving, but I think the police could have stopped her vehicle in a much safer fashion. Those girls did not deserve to die! Especially the passenger, she was doing nothing wrong. The police officers did not even attend their funerals.

There is supposed to be a big fuss right now in deciding if high speed police chases are going to allowed to continue. There are several states already that disallow high speed chases altogether. I think that the police and more importantly our government need to take a serious look at this issue.

    Just my 2 cents.

That happened in Georgia. Here's the whole truth.

The girls were going I believe 87 in a 70, and as soon as the cop started to come out of the median, the girl driving sped up. Speeds reached 110 MPH, and averaged 100 during the entire chase. She was weaving across all three lanes of the interstate continuously for around 70 miles or so. She was approaching I-95 during an extremely busy time and the chase had to be ended. They performed the manuever and the unfortunate accident happened. The truck hit a tree roof first over the driver and passenger compartment. They died instantly.

      HOWEVER...

The girl driving the truck was the DAUGHTER of a RETIRED TROOPER! He said that her license was suspended, and the only reason that he could think of for her running was that she was afraid of going to jail. He also said that even though the loss of his daughter is rough, that the troopers did everything correctly and were justified in using the manuever, and that he does not hold them responsible for what happened.

The media printed this story, but just like I figured, they left the interview with the daddy out because it completely deflates whatever anti-police spin they were trying to put on it. Luckily for me, the local paper gave ALL the facts.

for years, i have never been a believer of high speed pursuit. ive delt with all kinds of law enforcement agencies, federal, state, county, ...even been to the fed. law enforcement training center in ga. to assist in blow out training... and spoke my concerns for comment. i always said.. "you cant outrun motorola"......or 'what about choppers' then road blocks.............

alot of innocent bystanders suffer yearly due to high speed pursuit... and have of those hsp's are minor infractions...then the driver "freaks" and does something stupid..........

        dont believe in it.

We talked about this a lot lately. There is just a total disrespect for others. Speeding, Racing, and Showing off in urban/suburban areas = disgrace... In my opinion, these jerks should never be granted a license again. I really hope they find them. There needs to be tough consequences for this kind of cr@p. ...and, that is what this behavior is...complete and total juvenile cr@p.

I completely agree with you Ken and Kevin...
There was a recent persuit involving a mother who kidnapped her daughter (didn't have custody). They started to persue her, and she was up to ~100 mph speeds. However, they quickly decided to lay off because they didn't want to endanger her child in the passenger's seat. The mother became very relaxed since there were no cops behind her, so her speed slowly decreased. In fact, some people were even passing her on the freeway! I think her average speed was 80 in a 70 zone. She eventually ran out of gas and the police safely got her daughter into protective custody. Now imagine how different that would be if they would have had 6 cruisers persue her...
