  • has any one ever welded up the G80 diff in a fourth gen?

my diff is going bad, its in a 1994 Z with the G80 rear. on right turns with the throttle applied, it will do the infamous one tire fire. left turns and straight, its really is a posi. i have looked at all my options, all of wich are well over $600 just in parts that dont include a new ring and pinion. just currious if any one has ever welded the cones to the diff on one of these cars. it would be cheaper to do this and buy the stronger strange or moser axles than it would to get another "posi (its really a limited slip) traction" diff. any thoughts or comments.

PS i dont care about tire wear, or chiping around corners

I can be done but it will chew the front tires up due to the fact that there will be no slip in the rear wheels side to side. Rear tires that are locked to geter tend to make the car dive in a strait line and god help you if you find ice and want to turn

Ive seen it done lots around here with 4x4 trucks, I know the diff is not the same but the basic principals are there. I dont see any reason why it cant be done. I will warn that it will NOT last forever. In a truck they usually last 1-1.5 years. But then they are diving the SH)T outa them too.

This would be very dangerous. If you ever got in some water, if the back tires griped, you could turn the wheel and the car will go straight. If the front tires grip, the rear end will come around on you. Even if the road wasn't wet, the rear might pass you in a turn. The differential is there for a reason. If it was a drag car only, it would be fine. On a street car, you would probably end up breaking an axle if the weld actually held. Not a good idea for a street car.

I agree with Jeff I would not recommend this. Just was stating that it could be done.

i had a full on locker in my 89 GMC JIMMY with a 6" lift and 38.5x15.5x15 tires on it, and it wasnt bad to drive at all. i never broke an axle, but i also had one ton axles in it too. i really didnt mind driving it like that. I guess i am just upset that one it went bad, two you can not rebuild it, and three its so friggen expensive to replace it. there are so many other things on my list than a rear diff right now. like fun things. you know, suspension, ati pro-charger, headders, exhaust. i just know i will do this and end up dumping a grand on it besause i will buy a detroit tru-trac, or a Zexel torsion diff, and the have every thing replaced inside along with bearings and gears. ahhhhhhhhhh just a rant i guess

Did you have a locker type as in a Detroit locker or a spool as in a Moroso spool? They are not the same thing.

I don't think the Camaro is going to act the same as a truck. I wouldn't do it. Good luck.
