  • Correction, ladies and gentlemen!!!

We had all wondered why my 345 rwhp, 360 rwtq ride was only able to lay down a 13.185 @ 109.23 mph my last trip to the track.

I got called many of names -- from the "doofus" to the more not-so-family-oriented -- for not being able to drive my car.

Well, it turns out... not only was there an aggressive headwind (which anyone who DLs that video will be able to see from the flag waving)... but Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, MI is also 650 feet above sea level!!!!!!

Use the correction equations, and my ET was a 12.789!!!!!!

YES!!!!! I feel much, much better now

Not to tread or anything on ya, but dont some LS1's run like 13.0 -12.9X straight out of the factory with maybe just some tires I know ive read in MGHTP and High Performance Pontiac about atleast 3 do this. But anyways good time alot faster than me. Ill proly do a 13.5 with just my gears, cut.

Yeah, a few of them sure do.

      Mine didn't. It ran 13.3.

So 0.6 seconds cut so far. I am happy with that.

I only have probably 20 more horsepower to the wheels than those "factory freaks" that run 12.9s right out of the gate.

...I don't know yet if I will be going to Speed, Inc or Thunder Racing though...

...but if I go to Speed, INc I will let you know for sure.

Where did you get the formula from? One of the tracks that I go to is 2000+ feet ASL, and the altitude formula that the track officials provide only accounts for about .4xx seconds. Im guessing the headwind accounted for most of the drop in your predicted E.T.

Yeah, there's no way 650 feet buys you .4 second, but the headwind might be a real factor. I know when I raced at Byron once, there was a huge headwind which had to be slowing us down. Anyway, I think your times are fine for that power level and I wouldn't waste my time saying what the ET might have been if this & that would've been different, cause all you got to show anybody at the end of the day is the little slip of paper...

Where did you get your correction from? What data did you input?

Because it is nowhere near correct, using NHRA published altitude correction factors for "Stock and Super Stock" class cars. In fact, NHRA does not even correct for altitudes under 1,000-ft.

                    12.789 / 13.185 = .9699 That is the NHRA correction factor for roughly 2,550-feet.

Although NHRA does not publish the correction factors below 1,000-ft, using the formula they use would give a factor of 0.9946 for 650-feet.

                    13.185 X 0.9946 = 13.114

                    Something doesn't add up.

I don't remember the original thread, but you MPH is consistant with the rwHP... its just the ET which is "off".... a car that can run 109MPH is capable of running mid-12's.

Yeah, I figure he is traction limited like I (and many others) am. He might never get his ideal ETs with normal tires, so his car is doing just about what it should be doing for the setup he has. Jay, I'm assuming you are running street tires and not getting a great 60...

Actually it was I who gave the Jay the figure of 12.789. In all fairness to everyone that replyed, most people don't get serious enough into racing to buy their own portable weather station with logging / interface software. I own one, and with the Merlin software bundled, it has the capability to obtain any given track's (or city's) conditions for a specified day (up to a year) while plugged into my PC. It will obtain such things as ambient temperature, dew point, track elevation, relative humidity, wind bearing, and wind speed, as reported by the nearest weather data center. It also has the unique ability to accurately predict a corrected ET based on this info as well as the specified weight, wheel HP of the car(3650lb raceweight and 345 RWHP in Jays case), and a specified drag coefficient and total frontal area (sq/ft) of the car. My software gave me a .339 for a 98-02 TA drag coefficient and 22.07 sq/ft of frontal area. I love this software.

Given all of this data, my Merlin gave me the 12.789. Beleive me this thing is dead accurate. This is the same software used by Winston(Nextel) Cup guys, IRL, IHRA, and NHRA. This thing doesn't lie. At sea level with no wind, and a 3650lb raceweight and putting 345hp to the ground, a 12.789 is easily obtained.

Edit: I do agree with Kevin, at the end of the day you do only have your slip to show. It is just cool to see what your car would run at sea level and good weather.

                          Yeah, street tires. 2.1 60'.

But what confuses me is that I see many people running 2.1 60's with 325 rwhp and breaking into the 12s.

I guess I am still confused though as to how I trapped at 109 mph bone stock.

just curious what is ur set up? gears? auto or 6speed? torque converter? i've seen you talk about motor but how about some slicks and some LCA torque arm made the car hook and you'll put that power to the ground... i've pulled 2.0 60's with 275/40 -17 street tires.
