  • Good and Bad news

I posted a few weeks ago about my manifolds getting glowing red and the general reply was that it was running really rich. I think I found the problem... I have a huge rusted out spot at the base of my driverside manifold its bad enough I can't believe it hasn't broken off yet. And my passenger side I had to replace a stud that connected the manifold to the y-pipe and it must have been bad since I looked under the hood yesterday and it has snapped off right above where the bolt was so now I have two incredibly bad exaust leaks right before my 02 senors. Does this sound like a good theory? Now to the Good and Bad news. GOOD news is I have a brand new set of LT header and 02 senors to be put on. BAD news is I'm at college an hour and a half drive away. Will I be alright to drive home this weekend? I can try to take it easy on the car but I have 2 mountains to drive over.

I wouldn't drive it that far if they are getting red hot. First it is really bad for the electronics under hood and second you may be running a fire risk and third with that much heat at the manifolds it could transfer to the head and cook some gaskets. But it is your car. Personaly I would just do it where you are as you will probably need some work done by a muffler shop anyways.

speaking from personal expirence..i had a glowing manifold on my car (its only a 4cyl) normal driving it was ok..but when i pushed it going up hills to reno thats what finally made the glowing get to the point where i felt it was a hazard so i turned around

now what u can do...i know ur not gunna like this but u may have to just sit and stew at like 50mph up the hills..

Do you guys think I'm right on my theory of it running so rich because of the horrible leaks before the 02's? Also I have no where to work on it I'm at college right now and don't have the tools or place to even pull of an oil change. Also the only way the fix the manifold is replacing it and my headers aren't here and I'm not paying to have them put on either. Think my theory is right though?

What about getting it towed to the destination?

I would think about doing that but its about 75-80 miles home and I don't even want to think of the cost. I've already shelled out over $600 in just books alone so far. I think I'm going to try limping her home and just stop for about 15-20 minutes at the top of the mountains to let her cool off. BTW these aren't huge mountains there about 2000 ft. The only problem is its old roads so its really steep. The rest of the way shouldn't be bad and I'll just coast down the mountains to keep things cool (with the engine on of course).
