  • 80 Z28 vs 91 RS

A friend of mine offered to buy my auto 80 Z28, still in pieces, or mentioned a possible trade for his 91 RS (5spd) which is in fairly good shape and has a TBI 305. My camaro doesn't have a motor in it yet but has a built TH400, shift kit, full exhaust, etc..

What do you think..? And what can you really do with the 305 TBI? I don't know much of anything about 3rd gens.. Just trying to get some info.
    Thanks

I'd do the trade. The 3rd gen RS is a much nicer car than the 2nd gen, plus it is together and drivable. Seems to be a no-brainer to me! The 80Z in pieces is probably only worth no more than $1,000. The 91RS is probably worth at least $3,000. Money makes the decision here easy.

An 80 Z28 in pieces might not be the best project but the lines of the car are great! There is a resurgence of the body style that relly looks sexy. Visit http://www.nastyz28.com/ wich is taylored for the second gens. I personly have a '79 Camaro with Z28 fenders and hood scoop.

That is not my Z28 by the way. It would not have Z28 badges. Its a car from the site.

You have a tough decision. Both cars have their pros and cons. I don't want to sway you one way or the other, but I can tell you all you want to know about the 305 TBI motors.

Modifying a 305 TBI engine is just like modifying any other computer controlled car. You can upgrade the intake, cam, heads, exhaust, the TBI unit itself, etc, just like any other car. Their are only two problems. One problem is that these motors weren't made to run 12s (not that you can't make them run 12s) from the manufacturer. GM was just trying to build a fuel efficient V8. The 305 TBI motors came stock with 170 HP and 255 ft. lbs. of TQ. The other problem is that, just like any other computer controlled car, after a certain number of mods, the computer has to be "reprogrammed" (with custom PROMs). You can burn your own PROMs, though.

You can find out all you want about 3rd gens, and TBI, at www.thirdgen.org , that's what I do .

            Good luck either way!
