2 different kinds of daytime running lights

OK me and my friend both have 1996 Trans Am's. My questoin is that when he turns his car on his parking lights come on with out a turn of the knob . And when he puts the knob to the fog ligh position his his head lights come up but dont turn on. Then if u turn the knob more to the right his headlights pop on. I think that he has daytime running lights.
Mine is no oights on when car turns on. But i can turn the knob to the first position and my parking lights turn on and i can put the fogs on if i want with that little switch. Then the next position is the headlights.
How com he has daytime running lights and i dont. He says its cuz his car was made in canada and mine was in kentucky. But i thought all fbodys were made in canada.

all f-bodies were made in canada, but the ones made to be SOLD in canada had DRL's. Canada has had a DRL law for years. Even thirdgen had them in canada. 97+ got them in the U.S. I don't think his headlights should be popping up in the parking light position though. On mine, the parking lights come on at start up, no change when I go to the parking light position on the switch, but I'm able to turn on the fog lights at this position, far right is the headlight position and this is where the headlights go up and come on. If you turn it back to the parking light position after the headlights are already on, they'll turn off but not go back down. Fog lights go out when high beams are turned on. Confused?

Nope I totally understand. Maybe his head lights dont come on. Ill have to double check. thanks for the explanation. Howcomem if the car was suppose to be sold in canada the odometer reads in miles not kilometeres.

Good question. Maybe someone put an aftermarket DRL unit on it, that could affect the operation of the headlights if it was wired in not quite right.
