  • Source for Optispark

I need some suggestions on sources of Optispark units for a 1993 Z-28. These are the non-vented units. Too much coolant drowned mine so it is time to get out the tools and start digging. Just did a fuel pump so I am really in the mood to do more work.

    Thanks,

    Tom

ps: Thomas is in his second month in Iraq as a Marine and his car misses him, that is the only explaination that I have for the breakdowns. Glad he is making all that "loot" so he can repay me for getting it fixed!

You might consider upgrading to the vented version. You'll need a new timing cover, but between the opti and the cover, it should run about the same as just the non vented opti.

I don't know, Joe. There are some other things that have to be swapped as well-like the cam, opti electrical harness, cam gear... all in all a bit of work and expense.

Crap... forgot about the cam. You're right, there is more to be swapped on a 93 and 94.

The opti can be changed to vented by using the later vented cap, and hoses, and drilling out one of the drain holes on the base for a 3/16" plastic hose elbow, and plugging the other two. The original opti can be cleaned prior to these modifications, depending on the condition of the bearing.

Also good idea is to add a 3/16" hose to the water pump weep hole to route the future failure of coolant away from the opti.

There is always the Delteq solution as well...I know that what I'll be doing as soon as the opti goes again. Its not a question of "if"...just "when"! Then at least I know I'll have a nice ignition system...too bad I'll have to lose the Accel 300+ setup.

Take a peak at it here:

I read that you can just pull the cam drive pin farther out of the cam to drive the newer opti, but I have never tried it.

If you have a stock type cam that does not have the .500" hole in the front, the vented opti will never fit.

95-97 on the left, 93-94 on the right. Swap info here.
