  • LS1 Rebuild

Well i finally got around to taking the car into the shop...

This shop didn't even bring it into the garage and says it has a rod knock, if thats the case wouldn't it run bad?? It's not running bad, it just has that noise. So i talked to the guy on the phone at the shop its being brought to tomorrow (no charge!) and he said it probably has to be rebuilt but they will look at it and tell me what the problem is after they tear it into pieces. They said rough estimate about 3500 to do it all. Does that seem like a fair price to have the motor rebuilt??

what prompted you to take it into the shop? If it is noise in teh engine, when does it happen? how bad? Just when it's cold? or Hot? or all teh time?

With a 1998 LS-1, I would not let anyone tear into my engine before they can tell me anything. Unless the engine sounds like it's on it's last legs, I would be hesitant to take any direct action until I was sure that such drastic measures were needed.

        Here is my suggestion:

For a couple grand more, you could buy an LS6, or a 382 stroker... rather than paying $3000 to keep a stock engine.

Look at this as a blessing in disguise... you now have the opportunity to drop in a (_|_) - kickin' motor, and you can do it under the pretenses of "necessary repairs." It doesn't get much better than that in my opinion

The things that come to mind with slight valve train noise is piston slap (extremely common on the LS1) or bent push rod, not difficult to replace...again pretty common on the LS1 especially if your prone to missing shifts and over revving the motor.

I have to agree if your going to put out that kind of cash and the engine DOES NEED rebuilt...throw some after market goodies in the mix.

The massive oil leak has me concerned, can you determine its source?

Piston slap is a condition where the pistons have not expanded fully due to heat expansion. A cool engine that has not warmed up to operating temperature has increased tolerances in many areas. Most specifically the pistons haven't retained enough heat to fully expand in the bore and a slight knocking can sometimes be heard until warm. Some LT-1s are notorious for this, it can happen with any engine depending on internal clearnances and parts materials. Usually it is not hrmful, but caution should be used to not hammer the throttle until it's warmed up.

Weird. That link didn't work when I clicked on it but when I went back and clicked it, it worked. The It worked and worked and worked. I couldn't get it to not work again. I posted another link in the previous post. Does it work? I hate it when web sites are written with a search engine and the link it posts can't be coppied and pasted. I got both links from the history folder.

The link won't work...... the reason it works for you is the information is stored on your computer via cookies. You'll be able to go right to it with a simple click. Until someone else finds the exact page, they won't be able to shortcut right to it. You are right, it is one grand PITA.
