    Vehicle Operation News

Subject: 2003 model year full size Chevrolet/GMC Trucks; trailer brake-wiring harness.

    From: Ken Collings
    GSA Fleet Operations Division

    Kenneth.collings@gsa.gov

Please see that all Field Service Representatives are informed of this news so that our customers may be notified.

If you are towing a trailer equipped with electric trailer brakes, and you use a trailer brake wiring harness from a prior model year truck, the following conditions will occur:

    1. If your vehicle headlamps or parking lamps are turned off:
    - Your electric trailer brakes may not apply when the vehicle brakes are applied.

    2. If your vehicle headlights or parking lamps are turned on:
    - Your electric trailer brakes will apply without your vehicle brakes being
    applied.

Why? Trailer brake wiring harnesses from prior model years are not compatible with your 2003 model year vehicle because the electrical systems are different.

New trailer brake wiring harnesses may be ordered/purchased from GM Chevrolet and GMC dealers. The GM part number is: 15085418. I am uncertain as to the availability of this new harness by aftermarket operations at this time.

Oh, that's gotta be a roit. Imagine starting out down the road and you turn on your headlights.

How do they take a system that has worked fine for years, and screw it up all of a sudden? The 7-pin trailer wiring harness on my 2001 Silverado was great... direct plug in, and everything on the trailer worked exactly like it was supposed to. Guess somebody got smart and figured a way to save 5-cents by deleting a wire or two, and combining a few others here and there....
