  • any way to clean this up?

With the intake off, but without removing the heads, is there a way to clean out the inside of the head? You can see in the pic that some of the ports have a black residue that is VERY sticky. It's hard enough to stuff shop towels in there without them breaking up/sticking to it. When I look inside the ports, I can see the valve stem and tons of carbon deposits everywhere, as well. Or will fuel injector cleaner somehow clean this up once I get everything back together? Thanks in advance.

Carb cleaner or brake cleaner and a toothbrush and it will clean up pretty well. Try to soak up any additional residue or cleaner when your done.

Thanks Kevin how do I catch the deep stuff I clean up (the valve stem and beyond) that drops on top of the valve - or is there no way?

Well it really won't hurt anything since the cleaner will evaporate very quickly. Just try to not let the cleaner pool up on top of the valve. After time the valve actually begins to develop a seat on those deposits between the valve and the original valve seat, and if you disturb those deposits you could adversely affect the valve seat seal. As long as you don't get an excessive amount of cleaner pooled up, it really won't be a problem.

Chemtool B-12 is some good stuff! Just don't get in near your paint!

Would the carbon deposits fall off down on top of the valve from spraying carb/brake cleaner on them? Could that hurt anything? They're literally chunks of deposits in some areas, unlike a smear or thin coating on other areas. Thanks again

I've used a homemade vacuum attachment on my shopvac before to clean up little bits of removed gasket before. I just took the crevice attachment that cam with my shopvac and stretched about a 18" piece of clear plastic tubing over the end of the vacuum attachment and used the other end to get into tight spaces to suck up little pieces of debris.

You can get the tubing at Home Depot in the plumbing department. It is the same stuff that guys use to make beer bong hoses with.

Wow, great idea Kev! I never thought about using custom attachments on the vacuum. It'll feel great I finally get to clean some of that stuff out.
