  • LT4 Conversion

Hey guys. I'm all the sudden wanting an LT4 conversion kit for my formula. I know somebody here has to have done it or know somebody that has. I have a few questions.

First, what kind of price are we looking at for the install? I found the LT4 kit shipped for around $2300. I know you need computer tuning and whatnot. What would the TOTAL be for installation, minus the price of the kit? I am waaaay to stupid to undertake a project like that. I need somebody to do it for me.

Second, what kind of power can I see? I have herd that the LT4 kit will produce 425+ horsepower. Is this true? To go with the kit, I will at LEAST get headers and a bigger TB. Does that 425hp include other mods, or is that on a stock engine?

Sorry for the dumb questions. I need advice from a higher power! Thanks!

      misunderstood

You must have misunderstood what I was asking. I FOUND an LT4 coversion kit with everything you mentioned (except the tb, headers, coverters, and knock module). I was just asking what the installation of all of this would cost.

Now you see what I mean? Sorry. I am stoopid and seldom know what I am talking about. I hope this made it clearer. I just want to know what it would cost to have everything installed.

      Thanks for your help though,
      Jason F.

No need to apologize, and why would you say you're stupid? Your question was clear.

Just go to a shop and tell them what you have and they'll quote you a price. I think Ken has a site somewhere that has an approximate quote on the time it would take but be warned, it's expensive. Is there anyone you know who could help you? Too bad you can't do the work yourself....it would save lots of $$$. Maybe someone on here who lives near you would be willing to help???

        Cheers,
        Steve

As near as I can remember, it is about 10 hours to tear down and reinstall the heads, intake and exhaust. The front accessory teardown and cam installation is going to add about 3 hours to the job. Give or take an hour for other little things that can go wrong for a total of about 14 hours labor. That is a pretty close estimate. Multiply that by an average shop labor of $65 to $70 per hour, I come up with $910 to $980 plus tax for labor alone. Most likely they will add $50 for "shop supplies" for a grand total of about $1100 labor including tax. If anyone has recently paid for the swap, let me know how close I am. I know I am close on the time required... Done it a few times for friends. I am curious as to the going rate per hour that shops charge.

I could tell you what my H/C Timing chain and header install cost but then you would want to kill me!!!!!!

P.S.// Probably goes faster if you drop the engine!!!

                I'm a craazy mo-fo

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured that the labor would be around $1K or so. It doesn't suprise me at all.

If I had step-by-step instructions, I may be able to do it myself. I would have to have some darn good instructions though. It will be awile before I can even buy the kit, so that gives me time to plan things out a little.

Is this kit really worth $2500? It sounds good, but of coarse the people selling it will make it sound good. Some real world feedback would be awsome. They say it gives you 425hp!!! If thats true, it is worth all the money in the world. We all have to soup-up our cars to keep up with those 2005 Mustangs.

Oh, and Hemogoblin, you really don't know me. I am a messed up S.O.B. I have a hard time tying my shoes in the morning!

                Thanks again guys!

No! it's not woth 2500 when it can be had for 1700 if you shop around. There are a few places that will sell the kit for a good price. Jason Cromer@SamTaylorBuick is one.

Pace and Summit quote "425HP" for the LT4 conversion. They are basing that on a dyno test done by More Performance, and documented in a couple of popular magazines. The magazine articles failed to even mention the items that are required, but are not included in the kit, like the larger throttle body and the long tube headers. The article also failed to mention that More Performance used a $4,000 MoTeC computer to tune the setup. I suspect More used a few more "tricks" that they failed to tell people about.
