  • LS1 for 400?

I was wondering if it was possible to swap out an LS1 in a newer Trans Am for a 400 from a 71 firebird. I know the LS1 is a great engine and all, but the 400 I have has a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it and I wouldnt want to spend more money just buying new parts for the LS1, I think the 400 has around 395hp from what I was told and loads of torque what from I felt. I have the 400 sitting in my driveway and I might be getting a newer car, probably a 2000 trans am. I was thinking it is possible but maybe the motor mounts would have to be moved. so does anyone know if its possible?

oh, and newer trans ams are much lighter than older ones right? (1998 and up VS. 1971-1980)

I know there are a whole bunch of people that could give you a more thorough and better answer, but to the best of my knowledge, i'm not sure if it would be the best idea. First of all is the space alotted. That 400 would be a pretty tight fit, and when you did get it in, you would have to redo the motor mounts to mount it properly. The stock transmission is a 4L60E, an electronic transmission. Without your CPU, you might be looking for a new tranny also, prolly the one you have in the 71. Then there's the added weight. Other than the obvious 50 cubic inch difference, the LS1 is also an all aluminum block, where as your 400 is cast iron. The added weight would mean you have to tweak your front suspension, new spring n such. These are the things coming off the top of my head as of now, but like i said, im sure there is someone who can answer your question more thoroughly. It would be an original idea though. Best luck to you

yeah I see what you mean, I have a tranny ready to go on the engine and I was thinking abotu moving the battery into the trunk and taking out the A/C components to add some weight in the back and take some from the front. Im not completely positive that Im going to get a newer one, I just might stick with an older one and restore it. I am going to have alot of money for it so I dont mind doing motor mounts or anything to make it fit. I just dont want to buy a new car with an engine I dont want so Id have to sell the 400. But I guess it happens. Im glad someone kinda believes in it becaue most of the people I ask think im stupid, thanks.
