  • Fan noise

I've got a loud noise coming from what sounds like the fans. Are the motors replaceable independently or do you have to replace the whole assembly? Anything else it could be besides the fans? It makes me think its the fans because when you turn the motor off, the noise slowly winds down...its a spinning noise. Thanks.

When do you hear the "fan" noise? It isn't unusual for the AIR pump to corrode and start to make noise, but that only runs for the first 2 or 3 minutes at startup. The fans don't come on until A) coolant reaches 226degF; B) A/C is on, or C) SES light is on, for certain codes.

The previous owner put in a new chip that makes the fans kick on at 180°, so the fans have been working more. The noise kicks on when the fans kick on. Are the motors replaceable by themselves or do I need to replace the whole assembly?

Ok, here's an update. I started her up this moring and i heard the same buzzing noise, but it was quieter than last night and stopped immediately when the motor went off, unlike last night when it was winding down. My thoughts are that either its the low speed fan making the noise along with the high speed one, but the low speed comes on alone when the motor is first started for the day or...gulp...its the water pump maybe? Please, I need help figuring this out. Thanks guys.

If you want to isolate the fans to see if they are making the noise, disconnect the harness(s) at the fans and start it up. Since there will be no power to the fans, if they are the culprit there will be no noise. While you are at it, check all around the fans for any debris that may have gotten sucked up into there. Once I thought my fans were going south only to find out a small plastic bag had somehow gotten into the fan blades and would itself in there. Every time the fans kicked on, it buzzed. I've had the assembly out several times doing other repairs, but never checked to see if they could be taken apart and replaced independantly.

Thanks for the tip. I checked this morning and it almost looks like the motors can just unbolt and be replaced, but I'm not too sure yet. I'm going to go to one of my shops and have a look underneath. Hopefully its nothin' major. Btw, how's the GN? lol

Parked. Actually I am in the middle of an engine swap. The last motor let go with some ugly noises, so I am as we speak, buttoning up a fresh 109 block with a block girdle, steel main caps and arp studs, .030 trws, billet roller, ported irons, balanced, etc... It should stay together to the low 10s, but I'm not gonna push it that hard. It should hold nicely at the 10.50-10.90 range at 128-130. That is, if the trans stays together.

You could always swap in a 4L60 if you really wanted to. And, what's with the bottle of NOS in the background there? lol

The NOS is a leftover cheater system from an old pro street Elcamino.

                      The motors are available separately.
