  • Tranny repair question for '99 Z...

90K miles and that tranny has finally started to slip. OD is useless and third is starting to slip as well... Has anyone else had this problem? How much did it cost to fix? I KNOW that the seal has a leak in it and I had to put 1/2Qt of tranny fluid in it to get home last night (happened on way to work). Best place to get it fixed? (Chevy has decided to cut me a break by only charging 99$/hr labor so the dealership is out.) I might have to get it towed somewhere so I'm obviously not driving.... any help as to what I should expect would be greatly appreciated.....

    Thanks guys,

Its pretty common for the 4L60E to lose the 3-4 clutches. There are several internal upgrades you can do to HELP prevent this from happening again. Call around and talk to some guys that know about these upgrades. Thats where you want to take it. Also, now is the time for a shift kit, high stall convertor, and tranny cooler

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but.... The same thing happened to me, The Thing would chatter a little the 4th and 3rd start to fade and 50 is your top speed. I rebuilt the thing 4 times. Just trust me, call up TCI and buy one of there stage 2 or 3 trannys or go to a 200-r4 thats built but the a stock 4l60-e will not last long behind a LS1 with bolt ons.

A good performance rebuild will set you back between $1200-1400. All the solenoids should be replaced as well as all seals. You should go with a hardened sun shell (stock are weak and prone to cracking), 23 element low sprag (stock is 17 and much weaker), upgraded clutches and bands. A shift kit and trans cooler are a good idea while you're at it. A higher stall lockup converter would be great too.
