  • Fans won't work, what could be the problem?

I have heard a lot of people say that the relays for the fans on the LT1 cars tend to go bad once in a while. I'm kind hoping this is the problem since relays are cheap and aneasy fix, How many relays are their and where are they located under the hood? Also what procedure would I take in order to check to see if these relays are working? Last thing, if the relays are good then what other problems should I look for?

    Thanks

What kind of car are you talking about?

If you are taling about a 95 like mine, you can swap the relay in question with the fog light relay and see if it still works.

I don't read many posts of relays being a problem. There is a lot of info on the cooling system operation on my Tech Page (How To #13).

Not to scare you but mine were so weird that I finally caved and took mine to a dealer. The result was an $87 bill and nothing fixed. They were freaky I checked every wire, fuse, relay imaginable and couldn't figure them out. Neither could the dealership. I ended up running a fan switch that works off a solenoid and haven't had a problem...except after installing my headers and not realizing I let the ground wire lay on a primary but that was my fault lol.

I jus thought of something, you see I have a gutted cat and my air pump never shuts off and it kept on blowing fuses. Then the fuses stopped blowing but that was because the connector to the air pump melted and now my fans won't work. I remember reading on another board the fans get their power through this connector, is this true?

To be quite honest I don't know all you need to do though is trace the wires from the fans and see if that is where they get their power from. Or someone else might know off the top of their head.

I got my fan switch installed today, no more getting near the redline for me.
