  • opinions on 300zx

Me and a friend of mine were just given a '85 300zx rolling chasis for free. We're trying to decide what to do with it. We have the original engine block but no transmision or head. We're planning a solid axle setup for the car, it will be for drag racing, no auto-x. My question to everyone is if ya'll were doing this would u use the original v6 block or just get a gen1 350 and turbo 400 trans or something of that nature? I know i don't post much here but I do read a lot and greatly apreciate everyones opinions and advice.

I think you have to decide how involved you want to get. If you want a quick project, something to run around in and your not looking to go nuts, then the original parts would be the easiest option. If you want to go fast and dont mind the fabrication that would be necessary, a nicely built small block/TH400 combo would be pretty cool.

I personally think it would be neat to see what you can accomplish with the stock motor, or another Nissan motor altogether. You know, their VQ35 is just about the best V6 on the market today. The SBC + TH400 has been done over and over and over and... you get the idea. Try something different

Go with the conversion. Me and a buddy of mine have been fighting his car for the past week Monster Garage style, and that car is IMPOSSIBLE to work on. He's even said he wished he did an LT1 or LS1 swap. The motor is so wide you have to be a midget to get your hands in there. Go with the swap, especially if all you plan to do is dragrace. But remember, you're already in the hole, cause that car is heavier than the heaviest f-body ever produced.

If its just for fun and a drag car gut the crap out of the thing and go with either motor but build it up some and get the car as light as possible.

Use a 3.8 Buick V6 with Turbo. Its compact, Cheap, Light, and Pleanty aftermarket power. Also if your like me you have 3 TH350 lying out back, and those will bolt right up.

Yea I thought about the buick 3.8 turbo setup and have always like the grand nationals. I'm just not to familiar with them. I kinda figured that it would be more expensive than a nissan turbo setup. Horsepower per dollar is an issue, otherwise the ls1 out of my trans am would go in there when it is removed. How hard are the 3.8 buicks to work with and could good power be made on less of a budget than a small block or 3.0 nissan setup?
