I have a 1994 Formula. I started my car about 3 weeks ago and it would stumble and mis and then just die. After not idling about 3 times and dieing it wouldnt start again. I check the coil wire and no spark. I end up buying a NAPA refurbished opti- and i had replaced the cap and rotor about a month ago as the rotor was torn to shreds (car wouldnt start agina then also). Also bought brand new harness from opti to PCM. So I put it in and they car still wouldnt start. I check coils and it was fine when i tested it, but i still replaced it. Still no start. Then buy a new igntion module and put it in and lord behold it starts. Im so siked that after 3 weeks it finally lives agian. Well I started it while i still hadnt put the serpintine belt on, water pump, fans, mass air meter and intake tubing and i took the air pump off and took the cap from the manifold off(hadnt had a chance to cap them off. So before i put all that stuff back on, I decide to start it agian to hear the beast. I start it up and guess what it stubbles and misses and wont idle and dies. I pull the coil wire and i DO get spark from it now. Any ideas of what could of happened???

Yeah it sounds like a fuel problem. Open your gas cap and put your ear next to the tank entrance, then have some one turn the car to the "ON" Ignition system, If you dont hear a whine your pump is bad. also check the "Forgotten Filter", the fuel filter. Is there a code? could be the idle air sensor. Or the MAF. Also make sure the snorkel on your intake elbow is attached, Mine fell off one day and the car ran like Crap because the air was being pulled through the hole and not the MAF.
Just remeber there are only 3 things that can be wrong with an engine thats not firing: Its not getting gas, Air, or spark.1967 VW Bug 2.3L Ford SVO Inline 4 w/ Turbo, Sand-Drag VW Trans Axle, Race this Import.

well i just replaced the opti with a brand new one and now i dont get spark. the coil is fine and so is the power goin to the ignition module. i had the battery cable hooked up when i replaced the opti, so is it possible i blew something up since it was hooked up still to the battery? (like the igintion module again!) I am so pissed ive been with out my car for weeks and i just dont know what to do anybmore!

Are you getting a code ? if so get that looked at soon as you can. Be sure you have fuel presser , turn your key to the on spot a few times and see it you hear the pump , and or put a fuel presser gage on the fuel rail and see if you have good presser. Have you looked at you ingnion fuse? its under the hood in the fuse block and i think its a 10 amp. Have you cheaked to see if your spark pluges are good? When you put in the new distributor did you tuch the disk in the distributor the one that looks like a small music CD? i dont know what you know about it but that disk tells the car when to fire fuel trough the injectors and if it has any thing on it ,it can make the car shut down or miss on a ciylnder , you know run ruff. this is about all i can think to tell you to look at if you can get the car to run at all i think there is a tool you can get to cheak and see if the infector is getting a electrec impulse , but i dont have one and dont know what it is called. if all the injectors are not getting impules you mite have a bad distributor.

Ignition diagnostic
here is a proceedure to troubleshoot the ignition system........
Step 1. Connect a spark plug tester to a spark plug wire and
check for spark while an assistant is cranking the engine.
Check each plug independantly. this checks for open
spark plug wires. Spark in one or more than one wire
indicates the problem is in spark plug wires or optispark.
If no spark exists, go to step 2.
Step 2. Check for spark at the coil wire with the spark tester
while cranking the engine. A spark indicates the problem
is in the distributer (optispark). If no spark go to step 3.
Step3. Perform check on ignition coil.
a: Unplug coil electrical connector and check pink wire for
12v. If power go to b.
b. using ohmeter low scale, hook up the leads to the
primary terminals on the ignition coil. Should indicate
very low resistance. If not, replace coil.
c. Using the high scale, hook up one lead to the primary
terminal, the other to the secondary terminal. Should
not read infinite resistance. If it does, replace coil.
Step 4. Disconnect the ignition module connector and with the
key on, check voltage at terminals A and D on the harness
side of the connector. (pink/black and white/black wires)
If under 10 volts check for faulty circuit from the ignition
module to the coil or check for grounded external coil
circuit. If 10 volts or more, change the voltmeter to a/c
scale and measure voltage on terminal B while engine is
cranking. (white wire). If 0 volts, Have ECM checked. If 1-
4 volts, with the key off, disconnect the module
connector. Install a LED type test light on the positive
battery terminal and probe terminal C on the harness side
of the connector (black wire). The light should illuminate.
If not, check ground wire in the harness to the module. If
the test light is on, go to step 5.
Step 5. Remove the coil wire from the coil and ground it to the
frame. Connect LED test light into the optispark harness
connector red wire terminal C. The harness connector that
you will use is located on the passenger side of the
engine up near the fuel rail. You will need to insert a back
probe pin into terminal C. If the test light flashes when an
assistant cranks the engine, the optispark is suspect. If
no flashes, replace the ignition module.
If the above tests results are correct and there is still no
start, it is tough to to tell the difference between a
faulty module or optispark. Module = Cheap$$, optispark
=moderate $$$.
Hope this helps
