    Engine Oil Filter Study

    I came across an interesting web site today on testing oil filters. There have been several threads here about oil filters so I thought ya'll might like reading it. http://www.minimopar.net/oilfilterstudy.html

    It looks to me like the Mobil 1 came out on top. By the looks of it, I wouldn't use a Fram on my lawn mower. I'm surprised at how cheap the filter is.

    Some thoughts about that study....

    -There is no "testing" involved, and he very honestly points that out right up front. All he has done is examine the mechanical parts and assembly.

    -This "study" has been floating around for several years... I would expect that many of the tested filters are either outdated models, or are now sub-contracted from different manufacturers. As he notes, he only tested Ford 5.0L filters, and filters for other makes and models may have different features or even be made by different sub-suppliers than the ones he examined.

    -At one time, at least 2 years ago, the site included correspondence from a FRAM "engineer" that condemned Fram's products, their performance and their build quality. Allied/Signal (parent company of FRAM) took the website owner to court and made him remove the critical correspondence. Unfortunate, because, if authentic, it revealed the FRAM stuff to be true junk.

    Not criticising the "study"... just making sure we all understand that it is just a "study", not a "test", and that it may be somewhat outdated. Based on my own experience with FRAM (extremely poor quality, nothing but problems) and AC/Delco (superior filtering results, based on cleanliness of engine at 65K mile disassembly) I think he probably has the filters listed in the correct order.

      Yes but it is the only one I have seen online before. I'm sure there are more and if anybody knows of any, post them here.

      I didn't know that Fram was such junk.

      I had read about 15 years ago that the Fords were good filter. I had a major problem with Purilator modulator valve and I had to call them. They said that Ford was a PITA to deal with because they had high standards. Even though they looked like they faired well in this "study" I'm not putting a Ford on a GM. LOL.

      I always like to make educated decisions but like you say, time changes and so do the filters. Right now it looks like I am going to stick with Mobil 1 filters and oil. From what I have read, they seam to be the best.
